Our opinion on American Express Business Gold Travel Insurance

Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

12h delay only. Zero cancellation. Most domestic disruptions resolve before this card pays anything. The Amex Business Gold travel insurance is a single benefit: $300 in reimbursement when a covered trip is delayed more than 12 consecutive hours. Weather, terrorism, equipment failure, or lost travel documents are the four covered reasons. That 12-hour trigger is one of the highest thresholds among business travel cards, and most U.S. carrier delays resolve under it. For a $375 annual fee card, the amex business gold benefits for travel protection are intentionally narrow. Trip cancellation, trip interruption, and emergency medical coverage are all absent. A $6,000 non-refundable international conference you need to cancel and a $40,000 ER bill in Japan both return zero from this card. The Baggage Insurance Plan adds modest secondary coverage: $1,250 for carry-on bags and $500 for checked baggage. If your employer reimburses cancelled business travel and your trips are mostly domestic, the gaps are manageable. Book premium non-refundable international flights on your own dime and the protection package falls well short of the fee.

What works on travel
  • $300 trip delay reimbursement after 12 hours: covers meals, lodging, toiletries, and medication for 4 covered delay causes
  • $1,250 carry-on baggage coverage: secondary reimbursement for lost, damaged, or stolen cabin luggage during a covered trip
  • $500 checked baggage coverage: secondary reimbursement through AMEX Assurance Company
  • 2 claims allowed per 12 months: the benefit can be used more than once per year
Where travel breaks down
  • No trip cancellation coverage: non-refundable flights and prepaid hotels are entirely unprotected
  • 12-hour delay trigger: one of the highest thresholds on the market, meaning most domestic disruptions resolve before it pays
  • No emergency medical coverage: Global Assist provides referrals only, all hospital costs abroad are your responsibility
  • No trip interruption coverage: costs to cut a trip short and return home early are entirely out of pocket
  • Baggage coverage is secondary: airline must pay or acknowledge the loss before the card benefit applies

Every dollar of any hospital bill abroad is yours. A standard ER visit abroad runs $10,000 to $80,000. The Global Assist Hotline dials the phone. You write the check.

What's not covered
  • No emergency medical insurance is included with this card
A medical air evacuation runs $80,000 to $200,000. This card covers none of it.

No trip cancellation at $375 per year

Paying $375 a year for a card with no trip cancellation insurance is a real problem. Had to cancel a $5,500 international trip: zero coverage. If you have significant travel spend, you need the Business Platinum.

12-hour threshold almost never triggers domestically

The 12-hour delay threshold is almost impossible to trigger domestically. I fly weekly and have never once hit it. American carriers resolve most delays under 10 hours. The Business Platinum's 6-hour threshold actually works.

File trip delay on the day it happens

For trip delay, file at aig.claimnotify.com/americanexpress or call AIG at 1-844-933-0648. The 60-day deadline runs from the day of the delay, not from when you return home.

3

Gather all documentation

Collect your card billing statement, carrier delay confirmation or PIR, police report (for theft), itemized list of lost or damaged items with original purchase values, and receipts for all claimed expenses.

4

Submit within the filing deadline

Trip Delay: 60 days from the delay date. Lost Luggage: 30 days from the loss. Purchase Security and Extended Warranty: 60 days from the incident. CDW: 30 days from the rental incident. Late submissions are denied.

FAQ

What people ask about the American Express Business Gold

  • No enrollment is required. Coverage activates automatically when you charge the full cost of a covered trip to your American Express Business Gold Card. For trip delay insurance, the full trip cost must be charged to the card (or combined with Membership Rewards points, vouchers, or frequent flyer certificates). For rental car CDW coverage, pay the entire rental with the card and decline the collision damage waiver at the counter before picking up the vehicle. Purchase protection and extended warranty also activate at the moment of purchase with no registration step. There is no phone call, activation code, or sign-up process. Coverage is included at no additional charge as a card benefit.
  • The trip delay benefit covers the primary cardholder and their family members, defined as a spouse, domestic partner, or dependent child under age 19 (or up to age 26 if a full-time student at an accredited college). A Traveling Companion who made advance arrangements to travel with you or your family members for all or part of the covered trip is also eligible. Rental car CDW coverage applies when the primary cardmember is the named renter on the rental agreement. Purchase protection and extended warranty apply to items purchased by the primary cardmember on the account. Additional cardmembers on the same account should verify their eligibility directly in the Guide to Benefits.
  • The rental car benefit provides secondary collision damage waiver (CDW) coverage up to $50,000. To activate it, decline the rental agency's CDW or loss damage waiver at the counter and pay the full rental cost with the Business Gold Card. Secondary coverage means your personal auto insurance must respond first; the card covers remaining eligible damage up to $50,000. Rentals must not exceed 30 consecutive days. Coverage is provided by AMEX Assurance Company, not the AIG Trip Delay insurer. Liability coverage for injury or property damage to third parties is not included in this benefit. If you do not carry personal auto insurance, the benefit functions as the only available payer.
  • The filing process depends on which benefit applies. For trip delay insurance, notify AIG within 60 days of the delay by calling 1-844-933-0648 or visiting aig.claimnotify.com/americanexpress. Required documentation includes a carrier statement confirming the delay, copies of your airline tickets, your card charge receipt, and receipts for all expenses claimed. Submit full proof of loss within 180 days of the incident. For rental car, baggage, and purchase protection claims, contact AMEX Assurance Company through the number on the back of your card. Document everything on the day of the incident: collect the carrier statement before leaving the airport, photograph any damage, and keep all receipts dated.
  • The Business Gold Card does not include trip cancellation insurance, trip interruption coverage, emergency medical or dental coverage abroad, or emergency medical evacuation coverage. The Global Assist Hotline (available 24 hours) provides referrals and logistics coordination in emergencies but does not pay any medical or evacuation costs. Travel accident insurance (accidental death and dismemberment) is also absent. Cell phone protection is not included. Baggage delay coverage is not part of this card's benefits. The card's full travel disruption protection is a $300 trip delay benefit that triggers after 12 hours. Cardholders who need cancellation protection or international medical coverage for business travel will need a standalone travel insurance policy in addition to this card.
  • Yes, for international travel. The Business Gold Card does not include emergency medical or evacuation coverage. The Global Assist Hotline refers you to local doctors and hospitals but does not pay any bills or arrange medevac flights. A standard emergency room visit abroad costs $15,000 to $80,000 depending on the country and treatment required. A medical evacuation can exceed $100,000. Standalone travel medical insurance for a one-week international trip typically starts at $40 to $80 per person. Cardholders who travel internationally for business without a company-provided health plan extension should treat separate medical coverage as a necessity, not an option, when carrying only this card.
  • No. Cell phone protection is not included with the American Express Business Gold Card. A phone that is damaged, stolen, or lost is not covered by any card benefit, regardless of whether you paid your monthly phone bill with the card or purchased the phone with the card. The purchase protection benefit covers eligible items for 90 days from the purchase date, but applies to the phone only if it was bought directly on the card and the loss falls within that 90-day window. For ongoing protection beyond 90 days, consider a carrier insurance plan or a standalone device insurance policy.
  • Secondary. The Business Gold Card provides secondary collision damage waiver coverage, meaning your personal auto insurance must respond first if a covered rental vehicle is damaged or stolen. The card covers remaining eligible damage up to $50,000 after your personal insurer has paid. For cardholders who do not own a car or carry personal auto insurance, the benefit effectively functions as the sole payer since there is no other policy to interact with first. Business travelers who want primary CDW coverage with no personal policy involvement should look at cards offering primary CDW, which handles the rental claim directly without touching your personal insurance.
  • No. Trip cancellation insurance is not included with the American Express Business Gold Card. If you cancel a prepaid, non-refundable trip for any reason, including illness, a family emergency, severe weather, or a work conflict, there is no card benefit to reimburse those costs. The card's travel protection begins only after departure, with a $300 trip delay benefit that activates after a 12-hour covered delay. Cardholders who regularly book non-refundable international business travel out of pocket should consider a standalone travel insurance policy. A one-week international trip policy with trip cancellation coverage typically starts at $150 to $350 depending on the trip value and destination.
  • The trip delay benefit activates after 12 consecutive hours of delay, provided the delay results from inclement weather, terrorist action or hijacking, Common Carrier equipment failure, or lost and stolen travel documents. The reimbursement cap is $300 per covered trip, covering meals, lodging, toiletries, medication, and similar incidentals. You are limited to 2 claims per Eligible Card per 12 consecutive months. To file, notify AIG within 60 days of the delay by calling 1-844-933-0648 or visiting aig.claimnotify.com/americanexpress. Submit full proof of loss, including a carrier delay statement and expense receipts, within 180 days of the incident.
