Our take on travel insurance for the U.S. Bank Visa Platinum

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

Zero trip protection. Full purchase cover. This card was designed for balance transfers, not Bangkok. The only financial travel benefit that pays out is baggage loss at $3,000 per person, secondary to the airline, which must deny your claim in writing before you can file. Most cardholders assume a $0-fee card at least covers flight cancellations. It does not: there is no trip cancellation, no trip delay, no emergency medical. A standalone travel insurance policy starts at $100,000 in emergency medical for an international trip. This card provides $0 on that front. If you use this card for a domestic balance transfer and happen to check a bag on a trip charged to the card, the baggage loss benefit is real value. If you are boarding an international flight, this card leaves you exposed on every category that matters.

What does U.S. Bank Visa Platinum Travel Insurance actually cover?

No trip cancellation exists in the benefits terms. A $3,000 non-refundable hotel deposit is fully at risk. The card does not reimburse cancellations for any reason, including illness or death.

No trip cancellation coverage. This benefit is not included with this card. All prepaid non-refundable trip costs are the cardholder's responsibility.

No emergency medical insurance. A serious ER visit in Italy or Japan runs $20K to $80K. Medicare covers $0 outside the United States. Every dollar of any hospital bill abroad is yours.

No emergency medical coverage. Travel and Emergency Assistance provides referrals only: names of local doctors and hospitals, but no financial coverage. All medical costs abroad are the cardholder's responsibility.

Evacuation from a remote area can cost $100K or more. The card provides referral assistance but covers $0 of actual transport costs.

No emergency evacuation financial coverage. Travel and Emergency Assistance provides logistical referrals only. The cost of medical evacuation transport, which can reach $100,000 from a remote location, is the cardholder's responsibility.

No trip interruption benefit. This card does not cover costs incurred when a trip must be cut short due to a covered emergency. All additional transportation and accommodation costs are the cardholder's responsibility.

No trip delay coverage. This card does not reimburse meals, lodging, or incidentals during a flight delay of any length. Airlines are not required to provide hotel accommodations for weather delays. These costs are the cardholder's responsibility.

No missed connection benefit. This benefit is not included with this card. Rebooking fees and additional travel costs from a missed connection are the cardholder's responsibility.

No early return home benefit. This card does not cover the cost of returning home early due to a family emergency or illness. Emergency transportation costs are the cardholder's responsibility.

No baggage delay benefit. This card does not reimburse essential purchases when checked luggage is delayed. Clothing, toiletries, and other necessities purchased during a delay are the cardholder's responsibility.

Deductible : No deductible

Your checked bag is lost or stolen during a trip paid with this card on a common carrier. Visa Platinum reimburses up to $3,000 per covered person for loss of luggage and personal effects. Coverage is secondary: you must report the loss to the airline, obtain a Property Irregularity Report (PIR), and receive a denial from the airline before filing with the benefit administrator.

What's not covered
  • Damage (not theft or loss)
  • Items left unattended
  • Currency, tickets, documents
  • Perishables

Deductible : No deductible

Travel Accident Insurance pays a benefit in case of accidental death or dismemberment (AD&D) while traveling on a common carrier: flights, trains, buses, or cruise ships, when the full fare is charged to this card. Coverage amount is $500,000 for accidental death.

What's not covered
  • Non-accidental death or illness
  • Private aircraft
  • War or military conflict

No hotel or motel burglary protection. This benefit is not included with this card. Personal belongings stolen from a hotel room are not covered.

Purchase Security worked fast

Bought a laptop with my US Bank Platinum. It got stolen out of my bag at the airport about six weeks later. Filed the purchase security claim, got approved for the full amount in about three weeks.

Found out the hard way about no trip coverage

Had to cancel a trip due to a family emergency. Assumed this card would cover at least some of it since it is a Visa. Called the benefits line and they confirmed there is zero trip cancellation on the Platinum. Lost about $1,200 in non-refundable hotel and activity deposits.

Secondary CDW is still secondary

Used the rental car coverage when I got a small dent in a rental. The claim was paid, but I had to go through my own insurance first, which meant a claim on my personal policy. The whole thing took two months and now my rates might go up at renewal.

FAQ

What people ask about the U.S. Bank Visa Platinum

  • Most US Bank Visa Platinum benefits activate automatically when you pay with the card. For baggage loss, the common carrier ticket must be charged to the card. For rental car CDW, charge the full rental to the card and decline the rental agency's collision damage waiver at the counter. Purchase Security and Extended Warranty activate on any eligible item purchased entirely with this card. No pre-registration is required.
  • Coverage under the US Bank Visa Platinum extends to the primary cardholder and eligible family members, including a spouse or domestic partner and dependent children. For baggage loss and Travel Accident Insurance, coverage applies to the cardholder and immediate family members whose tickets were purchased with the card.
  • The US Bank Visa Platinum offers secondary CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) coverage. Secondary means your personal auto insurance pays first in the event of a collision or theft: the card then covers eligible remaining costs. To activate, decline the rental agency's CDW at the counter and charge the full rental to your Platinum card. Coverage applies to standard vehicles for rentals up to 31 consecutive days. Luxury and exotic vehicles are excluded.
  • Contact the benefit administrator at (888) 221-3289 within 60 days of the incident. For Purchase Security and Extended Warranty claims, have your original receipt, card statement, and incident documentation ready. For baggage loss, obtain a Property Irregularity Report from the airline and their written denial before filing. Submit all required documents within 90 days. For Travel and Emergency Assistance while abroad, call 1-800-546-9806 from the US or +1-804-673-7481 collect from overseas.
  • The US Bank Visa Platinum does not cover trip cancellation, trip interruption, trip delay, emergency medical expenses abroad, medical evacuation costs, or cell phone damage. If you cancel a prepaid trip for any reason, those costs are fully yours. If you are hospitalized overseas, every dollar is out of pocket. The card's CDW coverage is secondary only, and there is no roadside assistance.
  • No. The US Bank Visa Platinum does not include emergency medical coverage. Travel and Emergency Assistance services can refer you to local English-speaking doctors and hospitals, but provide no financial coverage. Every dollar of a hospital bill abroad is the cardholder's responsibility. The card's 24/7 assistance line is 1-800-546-9806 from the US and +1-804-673-7481 collect from overseas: for referrals only, not claim payments.
  • Yes. Purchase Security covers eligible items purchased with this card against theft or accidental damage for 90 days from the purchase date, up to $10,000 per claim and $50,000 per account per year. There is no deductible. Items excluded include cash, jewelry, animals, and motorized vehicles. File within 60 days of the incident by calling (888) 221-3289 and submitting documentation within 90 days.
  • No. The US Bank Visa Platinum does not include cell phone protection. Device repair or replacement costs from theft or accidental damage are the cardholder's responsibility. If cell phone protection is a priority, the US Bank Shield Visa (the current replacement card) covers up to $600 when the monthly cellular bill is paid with that card.
  • No. The US Bank Visa Platinum has significant gaps for international travel. There is no trip cancellation, no trip delay, and no emergency medical coverage. The only financial travel benefit is $3,000 in baggage loss coverage, which is secondary to the airline. For any international trip, especially one with non-refundable bookings or travel to countries with high medical costs, a dedicated travel insurance policy is worth considering.
