Our opinion on Business Advantage Travel Rewards Travel Insurance

Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

$1M accident. No travel insurance. Here's what that actually means for a business traveler on a no-annual-fee card. The card pays up to $1 million if you die or are dismembered on a common carrier: a flight, a train, a cruise ship. That is the only protection on the travel tab. Trip cancellation? Not covered. Emergency medical abroad? Not covered. A 12-hour delay with a missed hotel night? Entirely out of pocket. Most travelers assume a travel card covers trip cancellation at minimum. The Business Advantage Travel Rewards does not, and that gap runs $2,500 to $10,000 on a typical non-refundable trip. If you fly domestically for short business trips and your employer plan covers you abroad, the gap matters less.

What works on travel
  • $1,000,000 travel accident insurance on any common carrier: zero deductible, covers flights, trains, and cruises
  • No annual fee: full travel accident coverage costs nothing extra
Where travel breaks down
  • No trip cancellation: every non-refundable booking is at full risk if you cannot travel for a covered reason
  • No emergency medical abroad: all hospital costs in a foreign country are entirely your responsibility
  • No trip delay coverage: meals, lodging, and transport during any delay are out of pocket
  • No baggage coverage: lost, stolen, or delayed luggage receives no cash reimbursement from this card

Extended warranty approved in 13 days

Claim for extended warranty coverage of my Breville Food processor was started on 6.19.24. They did ask for weird documents, like a copy of the original warranty booklet. After all documents were submitted they approved the claim fairly quickly. They can make the process easier, but the outcome was fair. Approved 7/2/24.

Rental claim overseas: reimbursed for the wrong amount

I used this company for rental car insurance while traveling overseas. It was an absolute trainwreck. After HOURS spent on this process, I finally received an email stating we were being reimbursed. For the wrong amount. About $900 instead of $2700. I was out almost $3000 for almost two months. This was incredibly difficult for our budget. I would NEVER use this company again.

BOA Card Benefit Services claim: dependents not covered

I filed an online claim through Card Benefit Services, a benefit of my BOA Credit Card. The company called twice requesting relationship and age information for travelers. I got approved, and received reimbursement for half of my claim amount within a month. They reimbursed my spouse and me but not our dependents. Cardholders with children traveling should know coverage may not extend to dependents.

How to file a Business Advantage Travel Rewards Mastercard claim

1

Step 1: Notify within 45 days of the incident

Call 1-800-MasterCard (1-800-627-8372) as soon as possible after damage, theft, or loss occurs. Request a claim form and obtain your claim number before you have all your documents. For rental car claims, call within 45 days of the date of damage.

2

Step 2: Gather your documentation

For CDW claims: complete rental agreement, damage report from rental agency, demand letter and itemized repair bill, card statement showing the rental charge, copy of your driver's license. For purchase security: original receipt, completed claim form, and a police report if theft is involved. For extended warranty: original receipt, manufacturer warranty documentation, and an itemized repair estimate from a factory-authorized service provider.

3

Step 3: Submit within 90 days (CDW) or 180 days (purchase protection and extended warranty)

Send all documentation to Sedgwick Claims Management Services via the address provided on your claim form, or submit online. CDW claims must be fully submitted within 90 days of the date of damage. Purchase security and extended warranty claims must be submitted within 180 days of the incident or failure date.

FAQ

What people ask about the Business Advantage Travel Rewards

  • Travel benefits activate automatically when you charge eligible purchases to the card. For rental car coverage, initiate and pay the full rental agreement with your card, decline the rental agency's collision damage waiver at the counter, and sign the agreement in your own name. For extended warranty and purchase security, simply purchase the item with the card. No pre-registration is required. Travel and Emergency Assistance services are available 24 hours a day by calling 1-800-627-8372.
  • Coverage extends to the primary cardholder and authorized users on the account. For rental car coverage, all drivers designated in the rental agreement as authorized drivers are covered. For extended warranty and purchase security, the benefit applies to items purchased with the covered card account. Employees listed as authorized cardholders on the business account are also covered for benefits tied to their purchases. Consult your Guide to Benefits for exact covered persons definitions by benefit type.
  • The card provides MasterRental coverage through Mastercard. For business use, coverage is primary: file directly with the administrator at 1-800-627-8372 and your personal auto insurance is not involved. For personal trips, coverage is secondary: your personal auto insurance pays first, then the card covers the remainder. To activate: decline the rental agency's CDW at the counter, charge the full rental to your card, rent in your own name, and stay within 31 consecutive days. Vehicles with an MSRP above $50,000 are not covered.
  • Call 1-800-MasterCard at 1-800-627-8372 as soon as possible and request a claim form. For CDW claims: notify within 45 days of damage and submit all documents within 90 days. Required documents include the rental agreement, damage report, demand letter, itemized repair bill, and your card statement. For purchase security or extended warranty: report within 60 days and submit within 180 days. Documents required include the original receipt, a completed claim form, and a repair estimate or police report. Claims are administered by Sedgwick Claims Management Services.
  • This card does not cover trip cancellation, emergency medical expenses abroad, trip delay reimbursement, missed connections, or baggage loss and delay. These are the most significant gaps. Rental car coverage excludes vehicles with an MSRP over $50,000, motorcycles, trailers, full-size vans, and antique vehicles. Rental car coverage does not include personal liability for damage to other vehicles or property. For purchase security, items that disappear without clear evidence of theft, items purchased for resale, and damage from normal wear and tear are excluded.
  • No. This card does not provide emergency medical insurance abroad. The Travel and Emergency Assistance benefit provides referrals only: it can help you locate a hospital or physician in another country but pays no medical bills. All emergency treatment costs abroad are the cardholder's responsibility. A single ER visit in Japan or Western Europe typically runs $10,000 to $80,000. If you travel internationally, consider a standalone travel insurance policy or confirm your employer health plan covers you outside the United States.
  • Coverage is secondary by default: your personal auto insurance pays first in the event of damage or theft. The exception is when you rent the vehicle primarily for business purposes or outside your home country, in which case coverage is primary and your personal insurer is not involved. Since this is a business card designed for work travel, most rentals will qualify as primary. To use either type: decline the rental agency's CDW at the counter, pay the full rental with this card, and rent in your own name.
  • Yes. Purchase Security covers new items purchased with the card against theft and accidental damage for 90 days from the date of purchase. Coverage is provided through the Mastercard Purchase Assurance program, administered by Sedgwick Claims Management Services. File a claim by calling 1-800-627-8372 within 60 days of the incident. Required documents include the original purchase receipt, a completed claim form, and a police report if the loss involves theft. Cell phone protection, mysterious disappearance, and items purchased for resale are excluded.
  • This card is not sufficient as a standalone for international travel. It provides $1 million in travel accident insurance on common carriers and primary CDW for business rentals, but has no trip cancellation, no emergency medical coverage abroad, no trip delay reimbursement, and no baggage insurance. For international trips, a $4,000 non-refundable trip cancellation, a $25,000 emergency medical bill, or $500 in delay costs are entirely your responsibility. If you travel internationally more than once a year, supplementing with a dedicated travel insurance policy is strongly advisable.
