Our opinion on American Express Delta SkyMiles Gold Business Card Travel Insurance

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

One active benefit. Everything else is out of pocket. The Delta SkyMiles Gold Business card includes two travel coverage benefits: Trip Delay Insurance through New Hampshire Insurance Company (AIG) and the Baggage Insurance Plan through AMEX Assurance Company. The trip delay benefit pays up to $300 per covered trip for meals, lodging, toiletries, and medication when a Common Carrier is delayed more than 12 consecutive hours by weather, equipment failure, terrorist action, or lost travel documents. Two claims per 12-month period maximum. Pay the full ticket with the card and notify AIG within 60 days of the delay at aig.claimnotify.com/americanexpress. The baggage benefit covers carry-on bags up to $1,250 and checked bags up to $500 for loss or damage on trips charged to the card. The sub-limit to know: electronics, computers, and cameras are capped at $250 per item regardless of the bag type or actual value. No trip cancellation. No trip interruption. No emergency medical. No evacuation. No baggage delay. The Global Assist Hotline provides referrals and coordination at no charge but covers no expenses.

What works on travel
  • $300 trip delay coverage: AIG reimburses meals, lodging, toiletries, and medication after a 12-hour Common Carrier delay on trips charged to the card
  • $1,250 carry-on baggage insurance: AMEX Assurance covers lost, damaged, or stolen carry-on bags when the full airline ticket is charged to the card
Where travel breaks down
  • 12-hour threshold eliminates most delays: the majority of flight disruptions resolve before the 12-hour mark and pay nothing
  • $300 cap is often insufficient for overnight business travel: one night near a major hub plus meals frequently exceeds the entire claim limit
  • No trip cancellation: a cancelled business trip with non-refundable bookings returns nothing regardless of the reason
  • No emergency medical abroad: a single ER visit outside the US typically runs $10,000 to $80,000 and this card pays zero
  • No trip interruption, no baggage delay: expenses from cutting a trip short or waiting for delayed bags are entirely out of pocket
  • $250 sub-limit on electronics in baggage: a laptop in a lost checked bag returns $250, not $500

What does American Express Delta SkyMiles Gold Business Card Travel Insurance actually cover?

Quality, not just caps

No trip cancellation. This benefit is not included with this card. All non-refundable flight, hotel, and conference costs are the cardholder's responsibility if the trip is cancelled for any reason before departure.

A single ER visit outside the US typically runs $10,000 to $80,000. Global Assist coordinates logistics but advances no funds and covers no bills.

No emergency medical coverage. The Global Assist Hotline (1-800-228-6855) provides referrals and coordination only; it does not pay any medical expense. All hospital, medical, and dental costs incurred outside the US are the cardholder's responsibility.

No emergency evacuation coverage. The Global Assist Hotline provides coordination and referrals only; no evacuation transport is arranged or paid. All evacuation costs are the cardholder's responsibility.

No trip interruption coverage. This benefit is not included with this card. Costs from a trip cut short, including replacement flights home and unused prepaid hotel nights, are entirely out of pocket.

The 12-hour threshold excludes the majority of flight disruptions. A 10-hour weather hold at a connecting hub returns nothing. Premium Amex cards like the Delta Platinum Business and Reserve Business trigger at 6 hours with $500 per trip.

Deductible : No deductible

Full airline ticket must be charged to the Delta SkyMiles Gold Business card (or combination with Membership Rewards points or frequent flyer certificates) Delay must exceed 12 consecutive hours from scheduled departure or arrival Covered cause must be one of the four qualifying events per the policy Notify AIG within 60 days of the delay: call 1-844-933-0648 or visit aig.claimnotify.com/americanexpress Submit Proof of Loss within 180 days of the delay

Trip Delay Insurance covers up to $300 per covered trip for reasonable additional expenses when a Common Carrier is delayed more than 12 consecutive hours. Coverage is provided by New Hampshire Insurance Company, an AIG Company. Covered causes include inclement weather, equipment failure documented by the carrier, terrorist action, and lost or stolen travel documents. Covered expenses include meals, lodging, toiletries, medication, and other personal-use items. The full airline ticket must be charged to the card. Maximum 2 claims per 12-month period. Notify AIG within 60 days of the delay.

What's covered
  • Meals, lodging, toiletries, medication, and other personal-use items during a qualifying delay
  • Common Carrier delays caused by inclement weather, equipment failure, terrorist action, or lost travel documents
  • Eligible Travelers: Card Member, Family Members, and Traveling Companions whose trip costs are charged to the card
What's not covered
  • Delays caused by events known to the traveler before departure are excluded
  • Expenses paid before the covered trip are excluded
  • Intentional acts by the Eligible Traveler are excluded
  • For commercial cards: expenses not authorized and reimbursable by the employer are excluded

No baggage delay benefit. This benefit is not included with this card. Essential purchases required while waiting for a delayed bag, including clothing and toiletries, are entirely out of pocket.

No missed connection coverage. Rebooking costs and expenses while waiting at a hub due to a missed connection are not covered by this card.

No early return benefit. Last-minute one-way flights home due to a family emergency are not covered by any card benefit.

The $250 per-item sub-limit for electronics applies regardless of whether the item was in carry-on or checked luggage. A $1,400 laptop in a lost checked bag returns $250 from this card.

Deductible : No deductible

Full airline ticket must be charged to the card Coverage is secondary: airline liability settlement applies first Property Irregularity Report must be filed at the airport before leaving the terminal

High-value items including electronics, computers, cameras, and similar items are subject to a $250 per-item sub-limit regardless of the bag type or the item's actual replacement cost. File a Property Irregularity Report with the airline before leaving the terminal.

Trip delay paid out during a Chicago storm hold

Flight was delayed 14 hours due to a winter storm at O'Hare. Charged my ticket to the Delta Gold Business, filed the claim at aig.claimnotify.com within a few days with the carrier delay notice, hotel receipt, and meal receipts. Got reimbursed $290. Process took about 4 weeks but it was approved in full. The 12-hour threshold is real though — a 10-hour delay the previous month paid nothing.

CDW covered a minor rental scrape in Germany

Rented a car for a client visit in Germany, declined CDW at the counter, put the full rental on the Delta Gold Business. Minor scratch on return. Filed with AMEX Assurance at protectionbenefits. Secondary coverage meant my personal insurer was contacted first, but the card covered the remaining repair cost. The claim took about 6 weeks. It worked as described — just slow.

Extended warranty saved $800 on a printer at 14 months

Office laser printer failed 14 months after purchase, one month past the one-year manufacturer warranty. Called AMEX Benefits, submitted the original receipt and warranty card. Received $800 credit toward replacement. For a $150 annual fee card, the EW alone more than paid for itself that year.

No trip cancellation wiped out a $2,800 conference trip

Had to cancel a business conference due to a family medical emergency. Non-refundable hotel and flight totaled $2,800. Zero coverage from the card. The trip delay and CDW are genuinely useful, but the absence of trip cancellation makes this a thin travel insurance card for anyone booking non-refundable international travel. I bought standalone coverage for every trip after that.

Laptop sub-limit on baggage was a nasty surprise

Checked luggage was lost on a connection through Atlanta. My laptop was in it. The Baggage Insurance Plan has a $250 sub-cap on electronics regardless of whether it's carry-on or checked. I got $250 from AMEX on a $1,600 laptop after the airline paid almost nothing. The card benefit sounds useful until you hit the electronics sub-limit. Carry your laptop. Every time.

How to file a Delta SkyMiles Gold Business card claim

1

Step 1: Notify within 60 days of the incident

For Trip Delay: call AIG at 1-844-933-0648 or visit aig.claimnotify.com/americanexpress within 60 days of the delay. For CDW: contact AMEX Assurance at 1-800-338-1670 within 30 days of the damage or theft event; do not settle directly with the rental company before contacting AMEX. For Baggage: file a Property Irregularity Report at the airport with the airline before leaving the terminal, then notify AMEX Assurance. For Purchase Protection or Extended Warranty: contact americanexpress.com/protectionbenefits as soon as the damage, theft, or defect occurs.

2

Step 2: Gather required documentation

Trip Delay requires: written statement from the Common Carrier confirming the delay and its cause, your card charge receipt, copies of Common Carrier tickets, and itemized receipts for all claimed expenses. CDW requires: signed rental agreement, itemized repair bill from the rental company, copy of the card charge, copy of personal auto insurance or notarized letter stating none, and driver's license. Baggage requires: Property Irregularity Report, boarding pass, airline settlement letter, and itemized list of lost or damaged items with values. Purchase Protection requires: original purchase receipt and police report if the item was stolen.

3

Step 3: Submit Proof of Loss within 180 days (Trip Delay) or 60 days (CDW)

Trip Delay: submit all documentation to AIG within 180 days of the loss (failure to meet this deadline does not automatically invalidate the claim if earlier submission was impossible). CDW: submit Proof of Loss to AMEX Assurance within 60 days of the loss. Claims are processed after receipt of satisfactory documentation. For Trip Delay, keep all carrier communication (delay notices, rebooking emails) as supporting evidence. For all AMEX Assurance claims, the portal americanexpress.com/protectionbenefits tracks submission status.

FAQ

What people ask about the American Express Delta SkyMiles Gold Business Card

  • Benefits activate automatically when you use the card to pay. For Trip Delay Insurance, pay the full airline ticket with the Delta SkyMiles Gold Business card and notify AIG within 60 days of the delay at aig.claimnotify.com/americanexpress or 1-844-933-0648. For CDW, charge the full rental to the card and decline the rental agency's collision damage waiver at the counter before pickup. For baggage insurance, the full airline ticket must be charged to the card. For purchase protection and extended warranty, pay for the item with the card. No pre-enrollment is required for any benefit.
  • For Trip Delay Insurance, coverage extends to the Card Member, Family Members (spouse, domestic partner, dependent children under 19 or under 26 if a full-time student), and Traveling Companions whose full trip costs are charged to the card. For CDW, coverage applies to the Card Member or authorized employee card member named as the Eligible Renter on the Rental Agreement plus authorized drivers listed on the agreement. For baggage insurance, the Card Member, spouse or domestic partner, and dependent children traveling on the same reservation are covered. For purchase protection and extended warranty, the primary Card Member and authorized users on eligible purchases are covered.
  • If your Common Carrier is delayed more than 12 consecutive hours due to inclement weather, equipment failure documented by the carrier, terrorist action, or lost or stolen travel documents, New Hampshire Insurance Company (AIG) reimburses up to $300 per covered trip for meals, lodging, toiletries, medication, and personal-use items. The full airline ticket must be charged to the card. Coverage applies to 2 claims per 12 consecutive months per card. Notify AIG within 60 days of the delay at aig.claimnotify.com/americanexpress or 1-844-933-0648, and submit Proof of Loss within 180 days. Coverage is secondary: airline compensation (vouchers, rebookings) applies first.
  • Yes. Car Rental Loss and Damage Insurance covers collision damage and theft up to $50,000 through AMEX Assurance Company (CRLDI Rev. 4/19/2024). Coverage is secondary worldwide: your personal auto insurance responds first even outside the US, with the card covering the remaining eligible amount. Charge the full rental to the card and decline the rental agency's CDW at the counter. Rental period must not exceed 30 consecutive days. Australia, Italy, and New Zealand are excluded. Peer-to-peer rentals including Turo are excluded. File damage claims at americanexpress.com/protectionbenefits or call 1-800-338-1670 within 30 days.
  • Trip Delay claims go to AIG: call 1-844-933-0648 or visit aig.claimnotify.com/americanexpress within 60 days of the delay. Submit your carrier delay notice, card receipt, tickets, and itemized expense receipts. Proof of Loss must be submitted within 180 days. CDW and baggage claims go to AMEX Assurance: call 1-800-338-1670 or visit americanexpress.com/protectionbenefits. For baggage, file a Property Irregularity Report at the airport before leaving the terminal. For CDW, notify within 30 days of the incident. Purchase protection and extended warranty claims also go through americanexpress.com/protectionbenefits.
  • The card has no trip cancellation, no trip interruption, no emergency medical coverage abroad, no baggage delay benefit, and no missed connection coverage. The Global Assist Hotline (1-800-228-6855) provides referrals and coordination but covers no expenses. For rental cars, Australia, Italy, and New Zealand are excluded, CDW is secondary everywhere, and third-party liability is not covered. Baggage claims for electronics, cameras, and computers are capped at $250 per item. Trip delay coverage requires a 12-hour delay minimum (not 6 hours) and is capped at 2 claims per 12-month period.
  • Yes, for any non-refundable bookings or international trips with health risk exposure. The card covers trip delays over 12 hours (up to $300), baggage loss, and secondary CDW. Every other major risk falls entirely on you: no trip cancellation, no emergency medical, no evacuation, no trip interruption. A single ER visit outside the US runs $10,000 to $80,000. Annual multi-trip business travel insurance plans covering all these gaps typically start at $150 to $300 per year.
  • The Baggage Insurance Plan covers carry-on bags up to $1,250 and checked bags up to $500 for loss, theft, or damage on eligible trips when the airline ticket is charged to the card. Coverage through AMEX Assurance is secondary: the airline pays first under its liability terms and the card covers the remaining gap. One sub-limit applies to every claim: electronics, cameras, and computers are capped at $250 per item regardless of the bag type or actual replacement cost. File a Property Irregularity Report at the airport before leaving the terminal and submit it along with your boarding pass and itemized list when filing the claim.
  • Purchase Protection covers eligible items bought with the card against theft and accidental physical damage for 90 days from the purchase date, up to $1,000 per claim and $50,000 per calendar year. No deductible applies. A laptop damaged 7 weeks after purchase or a conference microphone stolen from your car within 90 days can qualify. File through americanexpress.com/protectionbenefits or call 1-800-338-1670. Submit your original receipt and a police report if the item was stolen. Mysterious disappearance, normal wear, and motorized equipment are excluded.
  • Yes. Extended Warranty adds one additional year to eligible manufacturer warranties of five years or less. Coverage runs through AMEX Assurance Company up to $10,000 per item and $50,000 per year. A laptop with a one-year warranty becomes covered for two years total. To qualify, the item must be purchased with the card and the original warranty must be five years or less. Keep the original warranty documentation and purchase receipt for the claim filing during the extended period.
