Our opinion on American Express Amazon Business Travel Insurance

Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

Thin travel. One active benefit. Here is what that gap actually costs at the gate. Picture this: your flight is delayed six hours in Atlanta and you are out $80 in meals and a hotel night. The Amazon Business American Express pays nothing for that delay. The card carries no trip cancellation, no interruption, no delay reimbursement, and no emergency medical abroad. The one active travel benefit is lost baggage: $1,250 for carry-on bags and $500 for checked bags, secondary coverage through AMEX Assurance Company, on trips charged to the card. A medical emergency in Tokyo, a missed connection in Frankfurt, with zero reimbursement on both counts from this card. Standalone annual travel insurance for frequent business travelers starts around $150 a year and covers all three gaps. If this card is your only travel coverage on a trip abroad, you are self-insuring for the most expensive travel risks.

What works on travel
  • $1,250 carry-on baggage coverage: secondary reimbursement through AMEX Assurance Company when airlines lose or damage carry-on bags on covered trips
  • $500 sub-limit for checked bags: partial recovery for checked luggage loss on eligible trips charged to the card
Where travel breaks down
  • No trip cancellation: illness, weather, or family emergency trigger no reimbursement for non-refundable costs before departure
  • No emergency medical abroad: a single ER visit outside the US runs $10,000 to $80,000 and this card pays zero
  • No trip delay benefit: meals, lodging, and personal expenses during any length of delay are entirely out of pocket
  • No trip interruption: cutting a trip short for any covered reason returns nothing from this card
  • No travel accident coverage: accidental death or dismemberment while traveling is not covered

Purchase protection saved a $900 monitor

Dropped a monitor 60 days after buying it. Filed a purchase protection claim through AmEx Benefits. Submitted the receipt and a brief description of the accident. Got reimbursed for the repair within 3 weeks. Did not expect a no-annual-fee card to come through on that. Keep your receipts.

CDW works, secondary is the catch

Used the rental car CDW when a fender scrape happened in Chicago. Had to file first with my personal auto insurance which was annoying. Card paid the remaining balance after my insurer settled. The secondary structure is fine if you already carry personal auto, but understand the order of operations before you rely on it.

Good for Amazon spending, nothing for travel

This card is fantastic for Amazon and AWS purchases but treat it as a cashback card only when you travel. Had a flight cancelled and realized there is zero trip cancellation coverage. Ended up eating a $600 hotel booking. Great for business spending, zero for travel protection.

FAQ

What people ask about the American Express Amazon Business

  • Coverage activates automatically when you charge eligible purchases or trips to your Amazon Business American Express card; no enrollment or registration is required. For lost baggage coverage, the full trip cost must be charged to the card. For rental car CDW coverage, decline the rental agency's collision damage waiver at the counter and charge the entire rental to the card. For purchase protection and extended warranty, the purchase must be made with the card. There is no phone call, sign-up code, or opt-in process. Keep your card statement showing the charge; the benefit administrator requires proof of payment when you file a claim.
  • For baggage benefits, coverage generally extends to the primary cardmember and eligible family members traveling on the same itinerary when the trip is charged to the card. For rental car CDW, the benefit applies when the primary cardmember is the named renter on the rental agreement. For purchase protection, extended warranty, and return protection, benefits apply to items purchased by the basic cardmember on the account. Authorized users on the business account may have access to certain benefits; the exact scope depends on the specific benefit terms. The Global Assist Hotline is available to the cardmember and immediate family when traveling more than 100 miles from home.
  • The card provides secondary Car Rental Loss and Damage Insurance (CDW) up to $50,000 through AMEX Assurance Company. Secondary means your personal auto insurance responds first: you file with your insurer, and the card covers what your policy does not pay, up to the $50,000 cap. To activate the benefit, decline the rental agency's collision waiver at the counter and charge the full rental cost to the card. Coverage applies worldwide, with three exceptions: rentals in Australia, Italy, and New Zealand are excluded. The rental period must not exceed 30 consecutive days. Liability to third parties is not included.
  • Claims go through American Express Benefits at americanexpress.com/benefits or by calling 1-800-333-2639. For rental car damage, notify the administrator within 30 days of the incident and submit your rental agreement, the final rental bill, a police report if the vehicle was stolen, and your card statement confirming payment. For lost baggage, file a Property Irregularity Report with the airline at the airport immediately. The administrator will require it, along with your boarding passes and an itemized list of missing items. For purchase protection, submit your original receipt, a police report if the item was stolen, and your card statement. File on the day of the incident, not when you return home.
  • The card has no trip cancellation, no trip interruption, no trip delay reimbursement, and no emergency medical coverage abroad. Those are the four most expensive travel insurance exposures, and all four fall entirely on the cardholder. Rental car liability, covering damage to other vehicles or property, is also excluded, as are rentals in Australia, Italy, and New Zealand. Cell phone protection is not included. Purchase protection excludes mysterious disappearance, motorized vehicles, and perishables. Extended warranty does not apply to items with original warranties longer than five years. Pre-existing conditions are excluded from any applicable travel benefits.
  • Yes, for any international business trip. The card does not include emergency medical coverage abroad. The Global Assist Hotline (1-800-333-2639) provides referrals, translation assistance, and logistics coordination, but it does not pay any medical bills. A single emergency room visit outside the US can run $10,000 to $80,000 depending on the country and diagnosis. Surgical or hospitalization costs can reach six figures. A standalone travel insurance policy with $100,000 or more in emergency medical coverage fills this gap directly. Annual multi-trip plans for frequent business travelers typically start at $150 to $300 per year.
  • No. Cell phone protection is not included with this card. Screen cracks, accidental drops, and theft of your phone are not covered by any card benefit, regardless of whether you pay your monthly bill with the card or purchased the phone using it. A replacement or repair for a cracked flagship smartphone screen typically runs $200 to $450; a full device replacement can exceed $1,200. If cell phone coverage is a priority, compare standalone device insurance programs or business cards that include it as a named benefit with a stated deductible.
  • No, not as standalone travel insurance. The card is a strong business spending card (3% back on Amazon, AWS, and Whole Foods, no annual fee), but its travel protection is minimal. There is no trip cancellation, no emergency medical, no evacuation coverage, and no trip delay benefit. The only active travel insurance is basic lost baggage reimbursement: $1,250 for carry-on bags and $500 for checked bags, secondary coverage. For international business trips, supplement this card with a dedicated travel insurance policy. Note that this card is transitioning to U.S. Bank in August 2026; check the replacement card terms for any updated benefits before booking future trips.
  • The rental car benefit excludes exotic vehicles, antique cars, trucks used commercially, motorcycles, and recreational vehicles. Rentals in Australia, Italy, and New Zealand are excluded regardless of vehicle type. The benefit covers standard passenger vehicles: economy, compact, midsize, full-size, and most SUVs for personal or business travel. The rental period must not exceed 30 consecutive days. If you rent outside a standard passenger category or travel to one of the three excluded countries, the card's CDW does not apply, and you should purchase the rental agency's collision coverage or a standalone rental car insurance policy for that trip.
  • Yes, with limits. The card includes secondary Baggage Loss and Damage coverage through AMEX Assurance Company: up to $1,250 for carry-on bags and $500 for checked bags on trips charged to the card. Secondary means the airline's liability pays first, and most US carriers are liable up to $3,800 for domestic flights under DOT rules, so this benefit acts as a gap-filler rather than primary coverage. File a Property Irregularity Report with the airline at the airport before you leave the terminal, then submit your claim to American Express Benefits with the PIR, your boarding pass, and an itemized list of missing items. Luxury goods, electronics, and cash are typically subject to sub-limits or exclusions.
