Our opinion on Barclays Wyndham Rewards Earner Business Travel Insurance

$1,500 cancel. No medical. The travel insurance here is built for a narrow window: common carrier fares only, three covered reasons, and a $1,500 cap per person. Trip cancellation and interruption activate automatically when any portion of the trip is charged to the card, with no deductible. But coverage is strictly airline tickets, cruise line charges, and railroad fares. Pre-paid hotels, tours, and vacation packages are not covered. A single ER visit abroad runs $10,000 to $60,000, and every dollar of that is on you. No trip delay benefit: meals and lodging during a six-hour weather delay are out of pocket. Standalone travel insurance covering $100,000 in emergency medical starts at $80 to $150 for a week-long trip. If this is your only card internationally, the medical gap is real.

What works on travel
  • $1,500 trip cancellation per covered person: zero deductible, activates automatically when any portion of the trip cost is charged to the card
  • Baggage delay triggers at 4 hours: $100 per 24-hour period, up to $300 for emergency purchases including toiletries, clothing, and one device charger
  • $250,000 accidental death and dismemberment coverage: cardholder, spouse or domestic partner, and dependent children all covered on common carrier travel
  • Change fees and ground transportation expenses up to $250 also reimbursable under trip interruption
Where travel breaks down
  • No emergency medical coverage: all hospital and medical costs abroad are the cardholder's responsibility
  • No medical evacuation: this benefit is not included with this card
  • No trip delay benefit: meals, lodging, and incidentals during any travel delay are out of pocket
  • $1,500 cap applies only to airline, cruise, and railroad fares: hotels, tours, and prepaid packages are not reimbursable
  • Only 3 cancellation reasons covered: job loss, weather events, and terrorism do not qualify
  • Pre-existing conditions excluded with a 60-day look-back period

Clean Sedgwick claim, two weeks start to finish

The cell phone protection is the real star. My phone screen cracked while traveling for work, filed a claim with Sedgwick, paid the $50 deductible, and had a replacement authorized in less than 2 weeks.

Travel insurance too thin for international use

For a $95 business card, the travel insurance is pretty thin. $1,500 trip cancellation is fine for short domestic trips but useless for anything international.

Trip cancellation denied for hotel costs

Denied because the loss involved a non-refundable hotel booking rather than common carrier costs. I had to cancel under a mandatory doctor's no-travel order for a contagious illness and provided full medical documentation.

FAQ

What people ask about the Barclays Wyndham Rewards Earner Business

  • The Wyndham Rewards Earner Business card covers four benefit areas: trip cancellation and interruption (up to $1,500 per covered person, no deductible), baggage delay (up to $300 after a 4-hour delay), accidental death and dismemberment insurance ($250,000 per person for cardholder, spouse, and dependent children), and rental car CDW. Coverage activates automatically when any portion of the trip is charged to the card. What it does not cover: emergency medical abroad, medical evacuation, trip delay, or cell phone protection (removed July 1, 2024). Trip cancellation applies only to common carrier fares, not hotels or pre-paid tours.
  • No activation is required. Trip cancellation, interruption, and baggage delay coverage activates automatically when you charge any portion of the trip cost to your Wyndham Rewards Earner Business card. For rental car CDW, you must be named as the primary driver on the rental agreement, decline the rental agency's CDW at the counter, and pay the full rental with the card. Travel Accident Insurance activates when the full passenger fare is charged to the account. There is no phone call or form to complete before traveling.
  • Trip cancellation, interruption, and baggage delay cover the cardholder, their spouse or domestic partner, and dependent children, provided a portion of the trip cost was charged to the account. Travel Accident Insurance covers the same family group automatically. For rental car CDW, coverage applies to the account holder and authorized users who are named as the primary driver on the rental agreement. Traveling companions who are not immediate family members are not covered under the travel benefits.
  • To activate MasterRental Coverage, be named as the primary driver on the rental agreement, decline the rental agency's CDW or LDW at the counter, and charge the full rental cost to your Wyndham Rewards Earner Business card. Within the US, coverage is secondary: your personal auto insurance pays first and this card covers the remainder, including your deductible. Outside your home country, coverage is primary, meaning no personal insurance claim is required. The benefit covers collision, theft, vandalism, and physical damage, plus up to 2 tows and up to $500 in loss-of-use fees. File claims at mycardbenefits.com or call 1-800-Mastercard within 60 days.
  • For trip cancellation, interruption, and baggage delay claims, contact Broadspire (a Crawford company) at 1-855-830-3721 or file at myclaimsagent.com. Notify within 20 days of the loss and submit complete Proof of Loss within 90 days. Required documents include original unused tickets, itemized receipts for non-refundable expenses, the card statement showing the trip charge, and documentation of the covered reason (physician statement for illness, carrier notification for a transportation strike). For rental car CDW claims, go to mycardbenefits.com or call 1-800-Mastercard within 60 days.
  • The Wyndham Rewards Earner Business card does not include emergency medical insurance abroad, medical evacuation, trip delay coverage, or cell phone protection (removed July 1, 2024). Trip cancellation is capped at $1,500 per person and applies only to airline, cruise line, and railroad fares. Pre-paid hotel costs are not covered. Covered cancellation reasons are limited to illness, immediate family illness, and organized transportation strikes. Job loss, weather events, and terrorism are excluded. Pre-existing conditions have a 60-day look-back exclusion. For rental cars, exotic vehicles, trucks, and motorcycles are excluded, and personal liability is not covered.
  • No, not anymore. Cell phone protection was removed from the Wyndham Rewards Earner Business card effective July 1, 2024. Prior to that date, the benefit covered up to $600 per claim with a $50 deductible for accidental damage and theft, administered by Sedgwick. The card no longer provides any coverage for mobile phone damage or theft. If you were paying your business phone bill with this card to earn 5x points and get phone protection, the protection half of that equation no longer applies.
  • No. Pre-existing conditions are excluded under the Wyndham Rewards Earner Business card trip cancellation benefit. The policy defines a pre-existing condition as any illness, disease, or accidental injury for which medical advice, diagnosis, care, or treatment was recommended or received within the 60-day period immediately prior to the initial deposit or booking date of the trip. Prescription drugs for a controlled condition throughout that 60-day window do not count as treatment. Regular antenatal care through 26 weeks of gestation is also not considered a pre-existing condition.
  • For international travel, yes. The Wyndham Rewards Earner Business card does not include emergency medical insurance or evacuation. A single emergency hospitalization abroad can reach $30,000 to $100,000 depending on the country, and every dollar is the cardholder's responsibility with this card. The $1,500 trip cancellation cap also falls short for expensive international itineraries. For domestic travel or short Wyndham hotel stays where the trip cost is under $1,500, the card's built-in benefits may be sufficient. Standalone travel insurance covering $100,000 in emergency medical typically costs $80 to $200 for a week-long international trip.
  • No. The trip cancellation benefit covers only common carrier fares: airline tickets, cruise line charges, and railroad bookings. Non-refundable hotel costs, including pre-paid Wyndham stays, are not eligible for reimbursement. If you book a Wyndham hotel separately and have to cancel due to illness, the hotel cost is not covered. The $1,500 per-person limit applies only to the transportation portion of the trip. This is a meaningful limitation for a card marketed to Wyndham hotel loyalists.
