Our take on travel insurance for the Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select

Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

$5,000 trip cancel. No emergency medical. Here's what the Platinum Select card's travel insurance actually covers and where it runs out. The cancellation and interruption benefits are real: $5,000 per trip, zero deductible, with covered reasons that include illness, job loss, jury duty, severe weather, and supplier default. Travel delay triggers at 6 hours with a $500 per-person cap for meals and lodging. What the card skips entirely is any medical event abroad: no emergency medical, no evacuation, no travel accident coverage. A single ER visit outside the US runs $8,000 to $40,000, all out of pocket. Claims go through Virginia Surety Company at mybenefits.cardbenefitclaims.com, with the filing window opening on the date of the incident. If you travel internationally without separate health coverage, this card's travel benefits are not designed for that gap.

What works on travel
  • $5,000 trip cancellation per trip: zero deductible, ~18 covered reasons including illness, job loss, jury duty, supplier default, and mandatory evacuation
  • $5,000 trip interruption with the same covered reasons: nonrefundable pre-paid expenses and extra return transportation are recoverable
  • $500 travel delay per person at 6 hours: meals, lodging, and ground transportation reimbursed during extended delays
  • $3,000 lost baggage per person: covers bags lost, stolen, or damaged while in the care of a common carrier
Where travel breaks down
  • No emergency medical abroad: all hospital and clinic costs outside the US are the cardholder's responsibility, with no card-based reimbursement
  • No emergency evacuation coverage: if a medical evacuation becomes necessary abroad, the full cost is out of pocket
  • No baggage delay coverage: if your checked bags are delayed but not lost, essential purchases during the wait are not reimbursable
  • No travel accident insurance: AD&D coverage on common carriers is not included with this card
  • Trip cancellation and delay benefits are secondary: the card reimburses only what airlines or other insurance do not cover first

What does Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select Travel Insurance actually cover?

Coverage is secondary: the card reimburses only what airlines, hotels, and other insurance sources do not cover first. AAdvantage miles redeemed for gift cards are not eligible purchases under this benefit.

Deductible : No deductible

Trip cancellation covers up to $5,000 per trip when the Citi Card and/or AAdvantage miles are used to pay at least a portion of the pre-paid travel. Covered expenses include all nonrefundable costs: flights, hotels, tour fees, activity fees, and change fees charged by suppliers. Coverage is secondary: the benefit reimburses amounts not recovered from airlines or other sources. File within 60 days of cancellation at mybenefits.cardbenefitclaims.com or call 1-866-506-5222.

Recommended : $10,000

What's covered

  • Cancellations for reasons not listed as covered reasons in the VSC benefit guide
  • AAdvantage miles redeemed for gift cards are not eligible purchases

Trip cancel worked for a $1,200 claim

Trip cancel came through for $1,200 when I had to cancel due to illness. Not the highest limit but it worked.

First checked bag free is the core value

Got the first checked bag free on AA flights. That's the main value. The miles accumulate quickly if you fly American regularly.

Claim denied because I paid with AAdvantage miles

Denied because I had used Citi miles to obtain the flights. The literature states you must pay for the trip with the card, but it does not say you cannot use frequent flyer miles to get that benefit.

9-hour delay, zero reimbursement on trip delay

No trip delay coverage is a problem. Had a 9-hour delay, zero reimbursement. Should have used my Sapphire for the purchase.

1

Open your claim immediately

Go to mybenefits.cardbenefitclaims.com or call 1-866-506-5222 (Mon-Sun 8am to 12am ET). File the day the incident happens, not when you return home. Failure to file within 60 days will result in denial of coverage.

2

Gather your documents

Virginia Surety will request your Platinum Select card statement showing the original purchase, proof of the covered event (physician's statement, airline delay notice, or PIR filed at the airport for baggage), and itemized receipts for all expenses claimed.

3

Submit all documentation within 180 days

Return all requested documents within 180 days of the trip cancellation, delay, or loss. Virginia Surety will notify you of their decision once they have processed the claim.

4

Respond to follow-up requests promptly

Virginia Surety may request supplemental documentation. Respond promptly. Some cardholders report clean approvals in 2 to 3 weeks. Others describe multiple rounds of document requests before resolution: keep copies of everything you submit.

FAQ

What people ask about the Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select

  • Coverage activates automatically when you pay for a trip, flight, or rental car with the Platinum Select card. No pre-registration or enrollment is required. Paying at least a portion of the Common Carrier fare with the card is the key trigger for most travel benefits. Purchase protection and extended warranty activate on items bought with the card. The benefit administrator is Virginia Surety Company; claims go through mybenefits.cardbenefitclaims.com or 1-866-506-5222. Keep the original card statement showing the purchase: this is the first document Virginia Surety will request when you file a claim.
  • Coverage generally extends to the primary cardholder, authorized account users, and their immediate family members traveling on the covered trip. The exact definition of eligible travelers is specified in the Virginia Surety Company guide to benefits. For trips that include travel companions outside your immediate household, coverage eligibility may differ from the cardholder's own coverage. Call the benefits line at 1-866-506-5222 before departure to confirm who qualifies under your specific itinerary.
  • The Platinum Select provides CDW (collision damage waiver) as the primary payer on international rentals: you decline the agency's own loss damage waiver and the card covers collision and theft up to $75,000 without filing a claim on your personal auto insurance. Inside the US, coverage is secondary: your personal auto insurance pays first. To activate, charge the full rental to the Platinum Select and decline the agency CDW at the counter. Standard exclusions apply for exotic vehicles, trucks, and rentals beyond 31 days. Call 1-866-506-5222 to confirm coverage for your specific vehicle type and rental country.
  • Claims go through Virginia Surety Company at mybenefits.cardbenefitclaims.com or 1-866-506-5222 (internationally: +1-312-356-7830 collect). File the day the incident happens: most benefit windows open from the incident date. Virginia Surety will request your Platinum Select card statement showing the original purchase, proof of the covered event (physician's statement, airline delay notice, or PIR for baggage loss), and itemized receipts. Some cardholders report clean approvals in 2 to 3 weeks. Others describe additional document requests before resolution: respond to those promptly.
  • Emergency medical expenses abroad are not covered: the travel assistance provides referrals only, and all hospital costs are out of pocket. There is no emergency evacuation, no repatriation, and no travel accident insurance. Baggage delay is not covered: essential purchases during a delayed bag situation are not reimbursable. Cell phone damage and theft are not covered. Rental car liability (third-party injury and property damage) requires separate coverage. Pre-existing medical conditions and travel to restricted destinations are excluded from trip cancellation and interruption benefits.
  • Yes, separate medical insurance is strongly recommended for international travel. The Platinum Select does not include emergency medical coverage; the travel assistance provides referrals and coordination only, not bill payment. A single ER visit abroad runs $8,000 to $40,000 or more, entirely out of pocket without a supplemental policy. Annual travel medical plans start at $30 to $120 for most international trips. If your employer health plan includes international coverage, verify the reimbursement structure and geographic scope before assuming you are covered.
  • The Platinum Select provides primary CDW coverage on international rentals, meaning the card pays first up to $75,000 and you do not need to file a claim with your personal auto insurer. For rentals inside the United States, coverage is secondary: your personal auto insurance must pay first. To activate primary coverage on international trips, decline the rental agency's CDW or LDW at the counter and charge the full rental to the Platinum Select. Primary coverage applies to standard passenger vehicles; exclusions include trucks, exotic cars, and rentals over 31 days.
  • Cell phone protection is not included with the Platinum Select. Device damage, theft, and mechanical failure are fully the cardholder's responsibility. The Virginia Surety Company guide to benefits does not list cell phone insurance as a covered benefit. Cards with dedicated cell phone protection typically cover $600 to $1,000 per claim with a $25 to $50 deductible, activated by paying your monthly phone bill with the card. If cell phone coverage is a priority, a separate card with that benefit or your wireless carrier's insurance plan is the practical alternative.
  • Pre-existing medical conditions are excluded from the Platinum Select trip cancellation and interruption benefits. A pre-existing condition is generally defined as any injury, illness, or medical episode for which you received treatment, diagnosis, or medication during the look-back period specified in the Virginia Surety Company guide. If a pre-existing condition causes you to cancel a trip, the claim will not qualify for reimbursement. Review the full benefit guide at mybenefits.cardbenefitclaims.com to confirm the exact look-back period before booking a high-value trip if pre-existing conditions are a concern.
