Our opinion on Citi Strata Premier Travel Insurance

Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

Strong cancel. No medical, no evacuation. Here is what those gaps cost a Strata Premier cardholder on a real trip. Trip cancellation covers up to $5,000 in Common Carrier costs, but only one reason qualifies: illness, injury, or death of a covered traveler. Weather delays, jury duty, and military orders are not on the list. Hotels and tours are not reimbursable even if non-refundable. Lost luggage adds $3,000 per trip for checked and carry-on bags, but electronics and jewelry are excluded. The medical gap is the exposure that matters. A single ER visit abroad runs $10,000 to $80,000, and an air ambulance from Asia or Latin America can reach $200,000 or more. Standalone travel insurance with medical and evacuation starts at $150 to $300 per trip for most international itineraries. File through Sedgwick at mycardbenefits.com or 1-833-251-6404 within 60 days of the loss.

What works on travel
  • $5,000 trip cancellation per trip: covers illness, injury, or death of an Eligible Traveler or immediate Family Member. Zero deductible. Max 2 claims per year.
  • $500 trip delay after 6 hours: reimburses meals, lodging, medication, and personal items. Covered causes include weather, equipment failure, and lost passport.
  • $3,000 lost and damaged luggage per trip: covers both checked and carry-on bags. Max 2 claims per year.
Where travel breaks down
  • One covered reason only: illness, injury, or death. Weather, military orders, jury duty, and quarantine are not eligible cancellation reasons.
  • Common Carrier scope only: hotels, tours, and pre-paid land arrangements are not reimbursable even when non-refundable and the covered reason applies.
  • No emergency medical or evacuation: all hospital and air ambulance costs abroad are out of pocket. A single ER visit in Europe runs $10,000 to $80,000.

What does Citi Strata Premier Travel Insurance actually cover?

Quality, not just caps

Common Carrier costs only: flights, trains, and cruise tickets. Hotels, tours, and all pre-paid land arrangements are not reimbursable even when the covered reason applies and those expenses are non-refundable.

Deductible : No deductible

Full cost of the Covered Trip charged to the Citi Strata Premier card Covers Common Carrier costs only: flights, trains, cruise tickets Covered reason: illness, injury, or death of the Eligible Traveler or immediate Family Member Hotels, tours, and pre-paid land arrangements are not eligible Max 2 claims per 12-month period Coverage begins on the purchase date of the Covered Trip

Covers nonrefundable Common Carrier costs (flights, trains, and cruises) when illness, injury, or death of an Eligible Traveler or immediate Family Member forces a cancellation. Only one covered reason applies: weather delays, jury duty, military orders, quarantine, and job loss are not eligible. Hotels, pre-paid tours, and land arrangements are not reimbursable even if non-refundable. The per-trip cap is $5,000 with a $10,000 annual account limit, maximum two claims per 12-month period. Pre-existing conditions within 60 days of the trip purchase are excluded.

What's not covered
  • Hotels, tours, and pre-paid land arrangements
  • Pre-existing conditions within 60 days of trip booking
  • Weather delays, military orders, jury duty, and quarantine: not covered reasons
  • Intentional self-inflicted injury

No emergency medical insurance in this card's Guide to Benefits. Every dollar of any hospital bill abroad is yours. A serious ER visit in Europe or Japan runs $10,000 to $80,000.

No emergency medical coverage. This benefit is not included with this card. All medical costs abroad are the cardholder's responsibility.

No evacuation coverage exists. A transoceanic air ambulance from Southeast Asia or Latin America costs $150,000 to $300,000, entirely at the cardholder's expense.

No emergency evacuation coverage.

Deductible : No deductible

Full trip cost charged to the Citi Strata Premier card Covers forfeited nonrefundable Common Carrier fares Covered reason: illness, injury, or death of Eligible Traveler or immediate Family Member Covers additional economy-class airfare to rejoin the trip or return home Max 2 claims per 12-month period

Covers forfeited, nonrefundable Common Carrier fares when illness, injury, or death of a covered traveler forces a trip interruption mid-travel. Also covers additional economy-class transportation to rejoin the trip or return home. The per-trip cap is $5,000 with a $10,000 annual account limit, maximum two claims per 12-month period.

What's not covered
  • Hotels, tours, and pre-paid land arrangements
  • Pre-existing conditions within 60 days of booking

  • Helicopter transportation

Trip cancellation paid within 3 weeks

Citi paid my trip cancellation claim within 3 weeks of submission. The Sedgwick online portal was clear. I had to cancel due to illness and submitted my doctor's note along with the card statement. No pushback on the documentation.

FlyerTalk Forums

Trip delay covered reasons are extremely narrow

The 6-hour trip delay benefit sounds useful, but the covered reasons are limited in practice. My delay for mechanical issues with vague airline documentation was initially denied. The qualifying causes are stricter than the marketing suggests.

CFPB complaint database

March 2016

Denied for using Citi miles on flights

Denied because I had used Citi miles to obtain the flights. The literature states you must pay for the trip with the card, but it does not say you cannot use frequent flyer miles to get that benefit. Resolved with monetary relief after CFPB complaint.

FAQ

What people ask about the Citi Strata Premier

  • No activation is required for Citi Strata Premier benefits. Trip cancellation, interruption, and delay coverage activates automatically when you charge the full cost of a Common Carrier ticket (flight, train, or cruise) to your card. Rental car CDW activates when you decline the rental agency's CDW at the counter and charge the entire rental to your card. Purchase protection and extended warranty apply automatically at the point of purchase. No enrollment form, registration, or phone call is required for any benefit.
  • Travel benefits cover the account holder, authorized users, and their immediate Family Members traveling on the same Covered Trip. Family Members include your spouse or Domestic Partner and unmarried children up to age 19 (or 26 if enrolled full-time at an accredited institution). Traveling Companions who purchase their portion of the Covered Trip with a Mastercard card may also qualify. MasterRental CDW covers the Eligible Renter named as primary driver on the rental agreement and any authorized driver listed by the rental agency.
  • At the agency counter, decline the rental company's CDW or LDW option, then charge the full rental cost to your Citi Strata Premier card. Coverage applies to collision, theft, vandalism, and physical damage to the vehicle. In the United States, coverage is secondary: your personal auto insurance pays first, and the card covers the remainder including your deductible. Outside your country of residence, coverage is primary: no prior claim with your personal insurer is required. Report any incident to the rental agency and file with Sedgwick at mycardbenefits.com or 1-833-251-6404 within 60 days.
  • Travel benefit claims go through Sedgwick at mycardbenefits.com or 1-833-251-6404. Report within 60 days of the covered loss. Required documents include your card billing statement showing the Common Carrier charge, the carrier's confirmation of delay or cancellation, receipts for covered expenses, and a physician's note for illness claims. Submit written proof of loss within 180 days. For purchase protection and extended warranty, contact Virginia Surety Company at 1-866-918-4670 or mybenefits.cardbenefitclaims.com. Keep any damaged item in case you are asked to return it for salvage.
  • The Citi Strata Premier has significant gaps for international travelers. There is no emergency medical or evacuation coverage: all hospital and air ambulance costs abroad are out of pocket, and a single ER visit in Europe or Asia can run $10,000 to $80,000. Trip cancellation covers Common Carrier costs only: hotels, tours, and non-refundable land arrangements are not reimbursable. There is no baggage delay benefit, no cell phone protection, and no travel accident insurance. Pre-existing conditions within 60 days of trip booking are excluded. Rental car CDW is secondary to personal auto insurance within the US.
  • The Citi Strata Premier does not include cell phone protection. This benefit is absent from the card's Guide to Benefits issued by New Hampshire Insurance Company and Virginia Surety Company. Screen repairs typically run $150 to $500, and a full device replacement can exceed $800. If cell phone coverage matters to you, consider charging your monthly wireless bill to a card that includes this benefit, or check your carrier's device protection options.
  • Pre-existing conditions are excluded from Citi Strata Premier trip cancellation and interruption coverage. The benefit terms define a pre-existing condition as any illness or injury that manifested symptoms, required treatment, or required prescribed medication within 60 days before your trip purchase date. There is no look-back waiver available on this card. If you or a traveling Family Member has an active or recently treated condition, a separate travel insurance policy with a pre-existing condition waiver would provide more reliable protection.
  • For basic trip protection and rental car coverage abroad, the Citi Strata Premier delivers solid value at $95 per year. The $5,000 trip cancellation, primary CDW outside the US, and $3,000 baggage coverage are genuine strengths. The medical gap matters for international trips: there is no emergency medical or evacuation coverage on this card. A hospital visit abroad can run $10,000 to $80,000, and an air ambulance can cost $200,000 or more. For international travel without separate health coverage, adding a standalone travel insurance policy for medical and evacuation is worth considering.
  • The Citi Strata Premier covers trip cancellation for one reason only: accidental bodily injury, sickness, or death of an Eligible Traveler or immediate Family Member. Weather delays, military deployment, jury duty, job loss, quarantine, and supplier bankruptcy are not covered reasons on this card. The benefit reimburses nonrefundable Common Carrier costs up to $5,000 per trip, with a $10,000 annual account limit and a maximum of two claims per 12-month period. Hotels, tours, and pre-paid land arrangements are not reimbursable even if non-refundable.
  • The Citi Strata Premier extends the original manufacturer's warranty by 24 additional months on eligible items with an original warranty of 24 months or less. Coverage is administered by Virginia Surety Company and is capped at the lesser of the repair cost or $10,000 per item, with a total coverage limit of 7 years from the date of purchase. Items with no manufacturer warranty, used or pre-owned items, and items purchased for resale are excluded. To file a claim, call 1-866-918-4670 or visit mybenefits.cardbenefitclaims.com.
