Our take on travel insurance for the Alterna Savings Cash Back Visa

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

The Cash Back Visa carries no travel insurance. Not emergency medical, not trip cancellation, not baggage, not flight delay. Your provincial health plan (RAMQ in Quebec, OHIP in Ontario) pays almost nothing outside Canada, so a single emergency room visit in the United States can run past $25,000 with this card covering none of it. If you travel even once a year, a standalone travel insurance policy is the gap to fill before you go.

What works on travel
  • No-fee card, so it costs nothing to keep as a backup in your wallet
Where travel breaks down
  • No emergency medical abroad: a US hospital stay is fully out of pocket
  • No trip cancellation or interruption coverage
  • No flight delay, baggage delay, or lost baggage benefit
  • No 24/7 travel medical assistance line
Our methodology

Every score is derived from official bank documents: terms and conditions, benefit guides, and claim procedures. No commercial relationship influences our ratings.

What does Alterna Savings Cash Back Visa Travel Insurance actually cover?

The Cash Back Visa includes no trip cancellation coverage. If illness or a family emergency forces you to cancel a prepaid trip, none of your non-refundable costs are reimbursed by the card.

There is no emergency medical coverage abroad on this card. Your provincial health plan pays almost nothing outside Canada, so a hospital bill in the US or overseas is entirely out of pocket.

No emergency medical evacuation or repatriation. An air ambulance from a remote area can run past $100,000, none of it covered here.

No trip interruption coverage. If you have to cut a trip short for a covered emergency, the card does not reimburse the unused, non-refundable portion.

No trip or flight delay benefit. Meals and a hotel during a long airport delay are your own expense.

Missed connections are not covered. Rebooking costs after a missed transfer fall on you.

No early return benefit. The card will not pay to fly you home early for a covered emergency.

No baggage delay coverage. Essentials bought while you wait for a delayed bag are not reimbursed.

No lost or stolen baggage indemnity. If a checked bag is lost for good, the card pays nothing toward replacing its contents.

No travel accident (accidental death and dismemberment) coverage on this card.

No hotel burglary or in-room theft coverage.

FAQ

What people ask about the Alterna Savings Cash Back Visa

  • The Cash Back Visa carries only purchase protection, extended warranty, and mobile device insurance, all underwritten by Assurant. There is nothing to register: coverage applies automatically when you charge the full purchase price of a new item to the card. There are no travel or rental benefits to activate. To keep a claim valid, hold on to the original receipt and your card statement showing the charge.
  • Coverage applies to the primary cardholder and authorized users on the account, for personal items charged to the card. Business purchases and items used for commercial purposes are excluded. Because the card has no travel insurance, there is no spousal or dependent travel-medical coverage to extend. The protection is tied to eligible purchases, not to people travelling.
  • No. The Cash Back Visa includes no auto rental collision or loss damage coverage. If you rent a car and decline the agency's collision damage waiver (the coverage the counter sells for around $20 to $30 a day), you are personally liable for damage to the vehicle. Either keep the counter waiver or pay with a card that includes primary rental coverage. Auto rental coverage on the Collabria lineup is reserved for the Visa Infinite tier.
  • Claims for purchase protection, extended warranty, and mobile device insurance go through Assurant, the benefit administrator, online at cardbenefits.assurant.com or by phone at 1-855-255-4037. Start the claim before you repair or replace the item. You will need the account statement showing the charge, the original sales receipt, and, for damage, a written repair estimate and photos. For theft, file a police report. Written notice must reach Assurant within 90 days of the loss.
  • The big gaps are travel and rental. No emergency medical abroad, no trip cancellation or interruption, no flight or baggage delay, no lost baggage, and no rental car collision damage waiver. On the purchase side, mysterious disappearance, used or refurbished items, vehicles, and business purchases are excluded, and all protection is excess coverage, meaning your home or renter's insurance pays first. For any trip outside your province, a standalone travel insurance policy would fill the medical and cancellation gaps.
  • Yes. Purchase protection covers new personal items against theft, loss, or accidental damage for 90 days from the date of purchase, up to $10,000 per item and $50,000 lifetime per account, as long as you charged the full price to the card. Extended warranty separately doubles the manufacturer's warranty, up to one extra year. Both are claimed through Assurant with the receipt and the card statement showing the charge.
  • Yes, within limits. Mobile device insurance reimburses repair or replacement of a new phone or tablet up to $1,000, provided you charged the full purchase price to the card. Expect a deductible of $25 to $100 based on the device price, and 2% depreciation for each month since purchase. You are limited to one claim per 12 months. Report loss or theft to your wireless carrier within 48 hours and to Assurant within 14 days.
  • No, not on its own. The card has zero travel insurance: no emergency medical, no cancellation, no baggage. Your provincial plan covers almost nothing abroad, so an accident or illness on a trip is fully out of pocket. The card works well as an everyday purchase-protection card, but for any travel outside your province you would need a standalone travel insurance policy for medical, cancellation, and baggage coverage.
