What does RBC Cash Back Mastercard Travel Insurance actually cover?

Quality, not just caps

This card does not include trip cancellation insurance. If you have to cancel a prepaid, non-refundable trip before departure for a covered reason, nothing is reimbursed — you would need a separate travel insurance policy.

This card does not include out-of-province or out-of-country emergency medical insurance. Hospital and physician costs abroad are not covered, and provincial health plans pay very little outside Canada, so a separate travel medical policy is essential.

This card does not include emergency medical evacuation or repatriation coverage. The cost of an air ambulance or a medically necessary return home is not covered.

This card does not include trip interruption insurance. If a covered event cuts your trip short after departure, the extra cost to return home and the unused prepaid portion of your trip are not reimbursed.

This card does not include flight or trip delay insurance. Meals, accommodation, and essential purchases during a delayed flight are not reimbursed.

This card does not include missed connection coverage. Extra costs caused by missing a connecting flight or departure are not reimbursed.

This card does not include early return coverage. The cost of returning home early for a covered reason is not reimbursed.

This card does not include delayed baggage coverage. Emergency purchases of clothing or toiletries while your checked baggage is delayed are not reimbursed.

This card does not include lost or stolen baggage coverage. The replacement value of luggage and personal items that are lost, stolen, or damaged in transit is not covered.

This card does not include common carrier travel accident insurance. There is no accidental death or dismemberment benefit while travelling as a passenger on a plane, train, bus, or boat.

This card does not include hotel or motel burglary coverage. Loss or damage to personal property from a break-in at your accommodation is not covered.

FAQ

What people ask about the RBC Cash Back Mastercard

  • No. This card carries no travel insurance — no emergency medical, trip cancellation or interruption, flight or baggage delay, lost baggage, travel accident, or rental car coverage. The only insurance included is Purchase Security and Extended Warranty. If you plan to travel, you'll need a separate travel insurance policy.
  • Purchase Security covers loss or accidental physical damage to eligible items for 90 days from the date of purchase, as long as you paid in full with the card and/or Avion points. The maximum is $50,000 (or the equivalent in Avion points) per RBC credit card per calendar year.
  • No. Purchase Security is supplemental (excess) coverage — it pays after any other insurance you have, such as homeowner's or tenant's insurance. In many cases it covers only your deductible on the other policy.
  • Extended Warranty automatically doubles the original manufacturer's warranty, up to a maximum of one additional year. It begins when the original warranty expires, and the combined extended plus original warranty cannot exceed five years. You must notify the insurer and get approval before any repair.
  • Yes. Both Purchase Security and Extended Warranty apply whether you pay in full with the card or with Avion points (or a combination).
  • No. The RBC Cash Back Mastercard does not include mobile device / cell phone insurance, price protection, or return protection.
  • The insurance is underwritten by RBC Insurance Company of Canada under group policy U-1014457-A. Assistance and claims are handled by AZGA Service Canada Inc., operating as Allianz Global Assistance.
  • Contact Allianz Global Assistance at 1-800-464-3211 to open a claim. Keep your original receipt, the credit card statement showing the purchase, and (for Extended Warranty) the manufacturer's warranty. A police, fire, or homeowner's insurance report may be required to establish eligibility.
