Our take on travel insurance for the Tangerine Money-Back Mastercard

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

There is no travel insurance on the Tangerine Money-Back Mastercard. Not a dollar. No emergency medical, no trip cancellation, no interruption, no flight or baggage delay. Your provincial plan (RAMQ, OHIP) pays next to nothing once you leave Canada, so a hospital stay abroad lands entirely on you. Standalone travel medical insurance for an international trip starts around $100,000 per person, and it costs less than a single night in a foreign ER. If you are booking a trip, this card does nothing for you. Buy a separate policy and do not think twice about it.

What works on travel
  • No annual fee, so there is no travel premium to weigh against the missing coverage
  • Simple by design: there is no travel insurance to misread or over-rely on
Where travel breaks down
  • No emergency medical abroad: a foreign hospital bill is entirely yours
  • No trip cancellation or interruption: prepaid flights and hotels are not refunded
  • No flight or baggage delay coverage of any kind
  • No travel accident or hotel theft protection

What does Tangerine Money-Back Mastercard Travel Insurance actually cover?

Quality, not just caps

This card includes no trip cancellation coverage. If illness, a death in the family, or a job loss forces you to cancel before departure, none of your prepaid flights, hotels, or tours are reimbursed. You would need a standalone travel policy for that.

There is no emergency medical coverage on this card. A hospital visit outside Canada is billed entirely to you, and your provincial plan (RAMQ, OHIP) pays almost nothing abroad. Standalone travel medical insurance is the only way to close this gap.

No emergency medical evacuation is covered. If you need an air ambulance or a medically supervised flight home, the full cost, often $50,000 or more, is yours. That is a travel medical insurance feature, not a card benefit here.

Trip interruption is not covered. If you have to cut a trip short for a covered emergency, the card does not reimburse the unused portion or the cost of getting home early.

There is no trip or flight delay benefit. A long tarmac wait or an overnight cancellation leaves your meals and hotel out of pocket.

Missed connection coverage is not included. A blown layover that forces a new ticket or an unplanned hotel night is not reimbursed.

Early return home is not covered. The card does not pay for a last-minute one-way fare if an emergency at home cuts your trip short.

Baggage delay is not covered. If your checked bag is late and you need toiletries or a change of clothes, those purchases are on you.

Lost or stolen baggage is not covered. The card does not reimburse luggage or its contents if the airline loses it or it is stolen during the trip.

There is no travel accident (accidental death and dismemberment) coverage. The card pays nothing for an injury or death while travelling on a common carrier.

Hotel theft is not covered. Items stolen from your hotel room during a trip are not reimbursed by this card.

FAQ

What people ask about the Tangerine Money-Back Mastercard

  • No. The Tangerine Money-Back Mastercard has no travel insurance whatsoever. There is no emergency medical, no trip cancellation or interruption, no flight or baggage delay, and no travel accident coverage. Its only insurance benefits are Purchase Assurance and Extended Warranty, both of which apply to things you buy, not to trips. If you are travelling, especially outside Canada where your provincial plan pays almost nothing, you need a separate travel medical policy. Do not rely on this card for any part of a trip.
  • No. There is no rental car collision or loss damage coverage on this card. If you decline the rental counter's waiver expecting the card to cover damage, you will be paying out of pocket. This is one of the main differences from the Money-Back World Mastercard, which does include primary rental coverage. With the standard Money-Back Mastercard, either take the rental agency's collision damage waiver or use a different card or policy that actually covers the rental.
  • Two benefits, both for purchases. Purchase Assurance covers new items charged to the card against loss, theft, or damage for 90 days. Extended Warranty doubles the original manufacturer's warranty, up to one extra year. They share a combined $60,000 lifetime maximum, and both are excess coverage, meaning your home or other insurance pays first. There is no mobile device insurance, no rental car coverage, and no travel insurance. It is a deliberately minimal package on a no-fee card.
  • Purchase Assurance automatically protects new items charged in full to the card against loss, theft, or damage for 90 days from the date of purchase. It pays the repair or replacement cost up to the item's original price, and gifts you buy are covered too. It is excess coverage, so you must claim on any homeowner's or other insurance first. Common exclusions include mysterious disappearance, motor vehicles, cash, tickets, and items used for business. The benefit shares a $60,000 lifetime cap with Extended Warranty.
  • Yes. Extended Warranty doubles the original manufacturer's warranty, up to one additional year, on eligible items charged to the card. For items with a manufacturer's warranty of five years or more, you must register them with the insurer within one year of purchase or the coverage does not apply. It covers parts and labour for mechanical failure. The $60,000 lifetime cap is shared with Purchase Assurance, and motor vehicles, used items, and business purchases are excluded.
  • No. Mobile device insurance is not part of the standard Money-Back Mastercard. If your phone is lost, stolen, or broken, this card pays nothing. Mobile device coverage of up to $1,000 is a benefit of the Money-Back World Mastercard, the upgraded version of this card, not the standard one. If cell phone protection matters to you, you would need the World tier or a separate device insurance plan.
  • Claims go through Assurant, the insurer behind the card's coverage. Notify them before you repair or replace anything, online at cardbenefits.assurant.com or by calling 1-855-255-6050 between 8 am and 8 pm ET on weekdays. Keep the original receipt, the card statement showing the full charge, photos of the damaged item, and the manufacturer's warranty for warranty claims. Proof of loss is due within 90 days of the loss. Expect some back and forth by email before the payment clears.
  • No. The Tangerine Money-Back Mastercard has no annual fee. That frames the insurance fairly: there is no premium to justify, so the two purchase protections are genuine extras rather than something you pay for. The trade-off is that almost everything else is missing. No travel, no rental, no mobile device coverage. For free shopping protection it is fine, but it is not a card to lean on for trips or rentals.
