Is Waggel Pet Insurance Worth It? Our 2025 Review
Our Expert's Opinion on Waggel
Waggel stands out on the UK pet insurance market with its single, highly customizable Lifetime policy covering both cats and dogs, offering annual vet fee limits up to £15,000, adjustable excess, and inclusive dental, complementary, and behavioural care (up to £1,000 each). The absence of basic, time-limited, or capped reimbursement formulas distinguishes Waggel from direct competitors such as ManyPets or Petplan, underlining a strong commitment to lifetime cover with modern digital management. Waggel’s reimbursement rate and annual ceilings are competitive, particularly for pet owners desiring a generous annual cap and simplified process, while the franchise (excess) remains flexible for budget control. Digital claims are handled entirely online, with real-time tracking and direct vet payments possible—a rarity among insurers reliant on paper forms. Waggel is especially well-suited for younger pets, new adoptions, and owners attracted by digital enrolment and the promise of ongoing, broad cover—though owners of senior or pedigree pets also report satisfaction due to claims flexibility and service quality.
The insurer is backed by Red Sands Insurance Company, a recognized Gibraltar/UK-regulated firm, ensuring statutory protection and stability. In 2024, Waggel processes thousands of claims per year, with policy volume and premiums steadily growing (publicly disclosed data not given). The service boasts an impressive 4.6/5 Trustpilot score from 9,660+ reviews, highlighting fast, empathetic claims handling—most settlements reported within days. Overall, Waggel receives high marks for digital experience, claims speed, and customer support, though some users note rising premiums at renewal as a potential drawback.

Waggel Guarantees
Waggel stands out by providing a single, fully adjustable lifetime policy for cats and dogs, offering up to £15,000 annual cover with per-condition yearly sublimits (e.g., £1,000 for dental, behavioral, complementary therapies) and flexible excess/co-payment options to tailor affordability.
This digital-first solution ensures annual renewal of reimbursement limits and typically covers up to 100% of eligible vet bills after the selected excess, with comprehensive coverage for illness, injury, dental care (for both accident and illness), therapy, and overseas emergencies.
Waggel's key advantages include no cap on vet consultations per year, free unlimited video calls with vets/behaviorists/nutritionists, individual claim support via "Customer Champion," and streamlined claims directly payable to any UK-registered vet.
However, routine and preventative care (vaccines, neutering, flea/worming, grooming, dental cleaning, pet food, and prescription diets) as well as advanced experimental treatments, prosthetics, and hereditary or pre-existing conditions are excluded.
Waggel does not offer a choice of formula (lifetime only) or stand-alone "accident-only" options, and cover extends only to pets kept as UK household companions, with some breed and global geographic limitations.

Waggel’s Lifetime policy exclusions align with standard pet insurance practice by refusing cover for pre-existing conditions, routine/preventative care, elective and cosmetic treatments, and advanced procedures such as stem cell therapies, gene therapy, prosthetics, or organ transplants. Distinctively, Waggel fully excludes notifiable and zoonotic diseases (such as FIV, rabies, and those under official animal health restrictions), a limitation not uniformly present among competitors.
They also exclude any costs related to breeding, pregnancy, or working animals, and specifically bar animals used for assistance, police, or commercial reasons from ever being eligible. Another notable exclusion is for losses tied to regulatory changes (such as pets newly banned by law), and on the liability side, claims arising from previous dog aggression history, family claims, rented property damage, or business activity are also not accepted.
Additionally, pet death due to illness is not covered at all for animals aged 8 years or older, and all overseas claims are limited to up to 90 days only in specific PETS scheme countries if strict entry rules are followed.

Waggel rates
Waggel holds a strong position in the UK market by offering a lifetime-only, fully digital policy, with cover levels and excess adjustable to suit many needs. Its overall limit—up to £15,000 per year—and benefits like dental treatment (£1,000), behavioural and complementary therapy (£1,000), and third-party liability for dogs (£2 million) place it among competitors with comprehensive, mid-to-premium guarantees.
The absence of classic annual/accident-only cheaper formulas and the all-digital direct management (quoting, claims, support) allow Waggel to offer broad coverage with leaner operational costs than traditional players. While its monthly premiums trend above entry-level or basic market offers, they remain competitive for a fully featured lifetime proposition, especially given service innovations (direct vet payments, free telemedicine, member perks).
Waggel is thus best described as holding a median to slightly competitive price position: not the cheapest nor the most expensive, but providing notably strong value for fairly complete cover—especially for owners seeking reassurance and digital convenience.

How much will I be reimbursed with Waggel?
When your pet needs care, Waggel reimburses you for eligible vet costs after you've paid your chosen excess (deductible). With the highest Lifetime Policy (up to £15,000/year, £100 excess), you can claim for accidents, illness, surgeries, dental, and more—helping dramatically reduce your out-of-pocket expenses compared to being uninsured. Here are typical reimbursement scenarios:
Example 1: Emergency Treatment for a Broken Leg
Total vet fees: £2,000 (X-rays, surgery, medication, follow-up visits)
Excess (deductible) for the condition: £100 (only paid once per condition, per policy year)
Amount eligible for reimbursement: £2,000 – £100 = £1,900
Your reimbursement: £1,900
👉 You receive £1,900 from Waggel, and only pay £100 out of pocket.
With Waggel’s Lifetime Policy, you only pay your chosen excess once per condition each year, and all treatments for that injury are covered up to your annual limit (£15,000 in this example).
Example 2: Dental Illness - Tooth Extraction for Gum Disease
Total vet fees: £750 (dental X-rays, extraction, anaesthesia, medications)
Annual dental cover limit: £1,000 (well within your plan)
Excess (already paid earlier in the year for a previous illness): £0
Amount eligible for reimbursement: £750 × 100% = £750
Your reimbursement: £750
👉 You receive £750 from Waggel, and pay nothing further.
Dental illness is covered provided your pet had a recent dental checkup and no pre-existing dental disease. Your £1,000 annual dental limit resets each policy year.
Example 3: Behavioural Therapy After Anxiety Diagnosis
Total behavioural specialist fees: £600 (consultation, certified behaviourist program, prescribed pheromone products)
Behavioural cover annual limit: £1,000
Excess (not yet paid on behavioural treatment this policy year): £100
Amount eligible for reimbursement: £600 – £100 = £500
Your reimbursement: £500
👉 You receive £500 from Waggel, and pay £100 out of pocket.
Behavioural treatment is included up to £1,000/year when prescribed by a vet-qualified behaviourist. As always, excess applies just once per condition per policy year.
With Waggel’s Lifetime Policy, you benefit from generous annual limits and only pay a small fixed excess per condition, making unexpected vet bills far more manageable.
Waggel Assistance
Waggel offers a robust digital claims system with a user-centric approach, assigning each member a dedicated UK-based vet nurse for assistance, which enhances guidance during stressful events and ensures quick resolutions.
The unlimited free video consultations with vets (Joii), behaviourists, and nutritionists are valuable features, enabling US pet owners to benefit from reliable guidance without additional costs and reducing unnecessary ER visits.
However, Waggel does not propose traditional "advance of fees" solutions like CareCredit or Petcard, so clients must pay the vet upfront unless the practice agrees to direct settlement with Waggel.
There is no structured nationwide partner veterinary network—policyholders can consult any UK-registered veterinarian but lack access to negotiated rates or direct clinics, potentially impacting speed in emergencies.
Support for treatments abroad is limited both geographically (EU only, up to 90 days/year) and administratively, which may not suit US-based clients needing international flexibility.
