2026 ranking of the strongest passports
How to read the score: 100 would be a passport that enters every country in the world without a visa obtained beforehand. Half the score is the share of the world's international tourists who travel to the destinations it opens, 30% the share of the 193 other states it opens, 20% the share it opens without a visit to a consulate. Singapore scores 92.6: 160 destinations, which receive 97.8% of the world's tourists.

Reader service: a strong passport gets you through the border, it does not pay the hospital. Entering without a visa says nothing about medical costs: a few days in hospital in the United States or Japan can cost more than the trip, and a medical flight home from Thailand runs into tens of thousands. Before you leave, compare medical limits and repatriation cover with our travel insurance comparison.
What the ranking says
Where does your passport rank?
The full list, passport by passport: for each of the 199 passports, the entry rule of each of the 194 destinations (visa-free, travel authorisation, visa on arrival, eVisa or consular visa). Download the full list (CSV) → Free to reuse with credit to HelloSafe; the entry rules come from Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0).
Methodology
Built by HelloSafe's travel insurance team, independently of our comparison, from public sources only, so every entry rule can be checked at its source.
Formula Score = 50% × share of world tourism open without a visa beforehand + 30% × share of the 193 other states open without a visa beforehand + 20% × share open without a consulate visit
- Rules change often. The ranking is a picture of entry rules on 22 October 2026: check the destination's official site before you travel.
- This study covers short tourist stays only. Visas for work, study, residence or a long stay are outside it: most countries require them whatever the passport. Some countries also set conditions (a return ticket, proof of funds, a passport valid six months, travel insurance) that this study does not score.
- A few cells of the source pages could not be read (20 of 38,409) and count as closed.
- Tourism weights use 141 countries with an official arrivals figure. The United Arab Emirates, Lebanon or Iran, for example, have none and weigh nothing in the tourism pillar, but still count in the two others.
- A government that bans its citizens from a country (South Korea for Afghanistan or Syria, for example) closes that destination in this study.

“Singapore has the strongest passport in the world in 2026: its citizens can enter 160 of 193 destinations without a visa obtained beforehand, destinations that receive 97.8% of the world's international tourists, according to the HelloSafe Passport Index of 199 passports.”
“The United Arab Emirates passport opens the most destinations, 168, but ranks only 14th in the HelloSafe Passport Index, because the United States still requires a visa from Emirati citizens.”
“16 of the 20 strongest passports in the world are European, with Germany first in Europe and fourth worldwide.”

Frequently asked questions
Singapore, with 92.6/100 in the HelloSafe Passport Index. Its citizens enter 160 of 193 destinations without a visa obtained beforehand. Japan (92.0) and South Korea (91.3) follow.
Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Germany, Croatia, Italy, Poland, Finland, Sweden and Denmark. From 4th to 10th, the European passports are within 0.2 point of each other.
The United Arab Emirates passport: 168 destinations without a visa beforehand. It ranks 14th because the United States, one of the most visited countries in the world, still requires a visa from its citizens.
42nd of 199, with 87.3/100. It opens 147 destinations without a visa beforehand; China and Russia still ask Americans for a visa from a consulate.
20th, with 90.7/100: 151 destinations without a visa beforehand, 28 more with an online visa.
28th, with 89.8/100, the strongest in the Americas: 150 destinations without a visa beforehand.
Germany’s (91.3/100, 4th worldwide), ahead of Croatia, Italy, Poland, Finland and Sweden, all within 0.2 point.
The Henley Passport Index counts the destinations a passport enters without a prior visa, from IATA data. We use public sources and weight each destination by the tourists it actually receives, so a passport that opens the most visited countries ranks higher than one that opens many small ones.
Not always. Many visa-free countries ask for an electronic travel authorisation before you fly, a passport valid several months after your return, a return ticket, and sometimes travel insurance. Check the destination’s official site before you book.
