Our analysis of Secure Gold

4,2/5

Secure Gold is the policy HelloSafe selected for travellers who refuse to cut corners on medical protection. The priority is clear: healthcare costs abroad, where low limits create real exposure. And on that front, the distinction matters: Secure Gold runs on direct billing, not reimbursement. The assistance team pays the hospital. You front nothing. An appendectomy in New York can exceed $50,000. With this policy, you don't hand over your credit card at the ER admissions desk.

Medical cover reaches €2.5M for the US and Canada, €1.5M for the rest of the world outside Europe. Repatriation is covered at actual cost: the attending physician from the assistance team decides whether it's triggered, not the local provider, not you. An organised evacuation runs between €30,000 and €150,000 depending on the destination. One critical point: if you arrange your own transport without calling the assistance line first, the claim can be refused. Save that number before you travel.

Cancellation is available as an add-on, and it's where Secure Gold genuinely stands apart: up to 42 covered reasons, the widest cancellation cover on the European market. Illness, redundancy, property damage, court summons, death of a close relative: the policy covers the situations that actually cause people to cancel, not just extreme cases. Up to the full trip price refunded.

Two providers sit behind this policy: IMA Group, the insurer that underwrites the financial risk and handles reimbursements, and a leading assistance provider reachable 24/7 by phone or WhatsApp, with claims managed through a mobile app. Two distinct roles, clearly defined.

Trip interruption up to €4,000 outside Europe, baggage up to €4,000. From 1 to 365 days, up to 50 travellers on a single policy, worldwide. Two things to factor in before subscribing: winter sports and extreme sports are excluded as standard, so add dedicated cover if your trip involves skiing or climbing. Subscription closes at age 74.

Subscription is 100% online through HelloSafe, in minutes. Secure Gold is best suited to leisure travel, solo or in a group, to destinations where healthcare is expensive. Its three main strengths: a high medical ceiling, direct billing at the hospital, and operational assistance on the ground.

Ideal for
High medical cover: up to €2.5M for the USA and Canada, among the highest on the market
A strong cancellation ceiling, up to the full trip cost
24/7 assistance with direct hospital billing
Less suited to
Travellers doing ski or extreme sports, which are not included in standard cover
Travellers over 74 (maximum eligibility age)
Those seeking high liability cover: capped at €100K vs up to €1M with some competitors

What does Secure Gold really cover?

Plan: Secure Gold, trips up to 365 days, worldwide.

This is where the policy shines. Cover reaches €2.5M in the US and Canada, where a hospital stay costs the most. Direct billing means you never front the hospital bill.

What's covered
  • US / Canada: €2,500,000 · Rest of world: €1,500,000 · Europe: €600,000
  • Hospital, surgery and medical care abroad
  • Direct billing: no out-of-pocket payment
What's not covered
  • Care linked to an excluded activity (skiing, extreme sports)
  • Medical costs back home, after you return

Repatriation is covered at actual cost, with no euro ceiling, and arranged directly by the assistance team, reachable 24/7. The medical decision rests with the assistance doctor, not you.

What's covered
  • Medical repatriation decided by the assistance doctor
  • Assistance reachable 24/7
  • Cash advance up to €3,000
What's not covered
  • Repatriation that isn't medically justified

Cancellation is covered up to the trip price and trip interruption up to €4,000. Most standard reasons (illness, accident, death of a relative) are covered.

What's covered
  • Serious illness, accident or death of a relative
  • Trip interruption up to €4,000
  • Early return: return ticket covered
What's not covered
  • Cancellation for personal convenience

Baggage is covered up to €4,000 and electronics up to €2,000. Enough for most travellers, but the electronics cap fills up fast with valuable camera or computer gear.

What's covered
  • Baggage: €4,000 (loss, theft or damage)
  • Electronics: €2,000
What's not covered
  • Electronics value above €2,000

Transport delays are paid out up to €400, one of the areas where the policy is more generous than average.

What's covered
  • Compensation for flight or transport delays

Search-and-rescue costs are covered up to €6,000, useful for an accident in a remote area.

What's covered
  • Search-and-rescue costs up to €6,000

Private liability is capped at €100,000: fair without being generous. Several competing policies go much higher here.

What's covered
  • Damage caused to third parties during the trip
What's not covered
  • Damage in a professional context
  • Liability tied to a rental vehicle

Skiing, winter sports and extreme sports are excluded. For an active trip, you'll need to add dedicated cover.

What's not covered
  • Skiing and winter sports
  • Extreme sports and high-risk activities
  • Mountaineering and high-altitude trips

Secure Gold is built for temporary travel (up to 365 days), not for expatriation: no daily allowance, no disability cover, no care back home.

  • Daily allowance
  • Disability cover
  • Medical costs back home

Insurer & assistance

Who insures and runs Secure Gold?

Two separate providers sit behind this policy: one to underwrite the financial risk, the other to support you in the field.

The insurer is IMA Group (Inter Mutuelles Assistance), a European specialist in travel assistance with over €400M in equity. It handles more than 4 million claims a year worldwide, a sign of the operational strength needed to honour payouts even in a major crisis.

The assistance provider is Heymondo, an international assistance company available 24/7 by phone, email or WhatsApp. Medical teleconsultation, direct billing at the hospital, organised repatriation: you front nothing. Claims are managed through their mobile app. Rated 4.7/5 by over 5,000 customers.

Two providers, hand-picked so that Secure Gold delivers when it counts.
