Suncorp travel insurance in 30 seconds

You cannot buy it. Suncorp Group announced on February 9, 2021, with its half-year results, that it would permanently cease underwriting travel insurance under all brands, and the product has not come back: suncorp.com.au today lists car, home and contents, landlord, renters, strata, life, income protection, funeral and health coverage, and the address that used to carry the travel product answers with a 404. Policies already running were not affected at the time, and they have all since expired. AAMI and Apia, two other brands in the group, stopped selling travel coverage in the same period. We print no expert score on this page, because there is no current product to rate, and no Suncorp limit, deductible or premium appears here for the same reason. What this page gives you instead: what happened and when, who to call about an old certificate, and real quotes for the coverage that replaces it, captured on October 26, 2026.

Our verdict

Can you still buy a Suncorp travel insurance policy in 2026?

No. Suncorp travel insurance has not been sold since February 2021, when Suncorp Group said it would permanently cease underwriting travel insurance under all brands, and nothing has replaced it in the Suncorp range.

The decision was announced on February 9, 2021 alongside the group's half-year results, in the same breath as two other exits: Suncorp Bank stopped offering personal loans, and Vero withdrew from Australian consumer and construction policies sold through intermediated partners. Suncorp described the move as part of simplifying its operations, and its chief executive at the time, Steve Johnston, said the exits were meant to streamline the business and would not have a material financial impact.

More than five years later the exit still holds. Reading suncorp.com.au on October 26, 2026, the insurance range runs from comprehensive car coverage and Queensland compulsory third-party (CTP) through home and contents, landlord, renters and strata, to life, income protection, funeral and health coverage, with barristers professional indemnity at the end of the list. Travel appears nowhere in it, and suncorp.com.au/insurance/travel.html answers with a 404 page rather than a redirect to anything else.

That is why this review carries no benefit table for the brand and no premium: we will not reconstruct limits from a wording we cannot read, and a withdrawn policy has no price. Someone searching for the name is usually after one of two things, and both have an answer here. Either you once held a policy and want to know where it went, or you need coverage for a trip and want to know what to buy instead.

  • The exit was permanent and stated plainly: Suncorp did not quietly stop quoting: the decision was announced with the group's half-year results on February 9, 2021 and covered every brand at once.
  • Policies already in force were honored: The group gave assurances at the time that the announcement would not affect existing travel insurance policies, which ran to their normal expiry.
  • The rest of the Suncorp range is unchanged: Car, home and contents, landlord, renters, strata, life, income protection, funeral and health coverage are all still sold under the brand today.
  • No renewal trap was left behind: Because the whole line closed rather than one plan inside it, there is no orphaned product still renewing quietly under the name.
  • The group is still reachable: General enquiries run on 13 11 55, and a line for non-English speakers calling from overseas is published as +61 7 3362 1222.
  • There is no travel product at any price: No tier, no add-on and no partner policy is offered under the Suncorp name, so a quote cannot be obtained at all.
  • Suncorp's own site never explains the exit: The travel address returns a 404 and the remaining travel contact page carries no product information, so a searcher is told nothing.
  • The sister brands closed too: AAMI suspended travel sales in 2020 and Apia ended its travel offering in February 2021, and Suncorp's decision was stated as covering all of the group's brands, so moving to another brand inside the group is not an option.
  • The public record is thin: ProductReview.com.au marks the listing as no longer operating and holds three reviews, so there is almost no customer history left to read.
  • The name still collects searches it cannot serve: Comparison pages and old guides keep the product alive in results years after it stopped existing.
Our methodology

Every year, our experts audit each plan against its binding policy wording: coverage, limits and exclusions, cross-checked with real customer feedback and live market prices. The analysis is fully independent, with zero paid placements and no insurer able to pay to influence a rating. We compare travel insurance across every country and currency, using the plans, prices and coverage actually offered in your country, not a single guide translated. For this page we checked Suncorp's own product range and the announcements behind its exit, read the policy wordings of the plans we put forward instead, and priced those plans live on October 26, 2026, so you can see which of the two every number comes from.

The exit

When did Suncorp stop selling travel cover, and why?

In February 2021, and because the group decided to simplify what it sells. The exact wording was that Suncorp would permanently cease underwriting travel insurance under all brands, which is why several consumer brands stopped at once rather than a single product being retired.

Suncorp did not name the pandemic in its statement. It placed the travel exit among a group of decisions meant to narrow the business, next to Suncorp Bank leaving personal loans and Vero leaving Australian consumer and construction policies, and it said the combined effect would not be material to its results. For a customer the practical meaning is simpler: this was not a pause, and the word in the announcement was permanent.

Sources: Suncorp Group's half-year results announcement of February 9, 2021 as reported by Insurance Business Australia and Business News Australia; the AAMI and Apia brand guides on finder.com.au; suncorp.com.au and the ANZ and Suncorp Group completion announcements of July 31, 2024, all read on October 26, 2026. The dates are the dates each brand stopped selling, not the dates the last policies expired.

One distinction is worth making here, because it sends people to the wrong document. Complimentary travel coverage attached to a credit card is a different product from a policy you buy, with its own activation rules and its own booklet, and the cards that carried it under the Suncorp name moved to ANZ with the bank on July 31, 2024. This page is about the standalone policy Suncorp used to sell.

Your old policy

What happened to the policies that were already in force?

They were honored, and then they expired. Suncorp gave assurances at the time that the February 2021 announcement would not affect existing travel insurance policies, so coverage already running continued on its original terms until its end date.

Australian single-trip travel policies are written for the length of one journey and annual policies for twelve months, so the last Suncorp travel certificates ran out during 2021 or 2022. In practice that means there is no live Suncorp travel policy today, and nothing to renew, cancel or claim against for a trip you are taking now. If you are holding a certificate, read the dates on it: they are what decides whether the coverage was in force when something happened, and the brand's later decisions change nothing about that.

An expired certificate is still a contract

A claim is judged on the wording that applied on the day of the event, not on whether the insurer still sells the product. If something happened while your policy was running and the file was never settled, it does not disappear because the line closed. Start with the general enquiries number, ask for the team that handles travel claims, and keep the certificate of insurance and any case reference in front of you. A general insurance dispute in Australia that cannot be resolved with the insurer escalates to the Australian Financial Complaints Authority.

Coverage gap

Which risks are you carrying while you have no policy at all?

The hospital bill, the flight home and the liability claim. Those three turn an incident into a financial event, and they are what the plans we priced on October 26, 2026 settle: medical and hospital care abroad up to about $580,000 on the richest of them, repatriation paid at actual cost with no ceiling to run out of, and personal liability up to about $5.2 million.

The part people underestimate is not the ceiling, it is who pays first. On Go Explore + and on WorldSecure Platinum, a hospital stay of more than 24 hours abroad can be billed directly to the insurer, so you are not asked to put a five-figure admission on a card and wait for a refund. Repatriation on all three plans is arranged and paid at actual cost rather than against a fixed limit, which matters because an air ambulance is priced by distance and not by your policy.

Search and rescue is the quiet one. It is covered at about $7,000 on Go Explore + and about $5,800 on World Travel and on WorldSecure Platinum, and it pays for being found after a fall on a trail or an incident in the water, before any treatment has started. It is also the benefit most often missing from a cheap policy, which is why it is worth checking before the medical ceiling impresses you.

Replacement coverage

What should a policy that replaces it actually pay?

At least a six-figure medical ceiling, repatriation at actual cost, a hospital bill settled directly and real personal liability. The three plans below are the ones we would put in front of a reader arriving on this page, read from their policy wordings and priced for the same trip on October 26, 2026.

HelloSafe data, October 2026. Real quotes computed on October 26, 2026 for one traveler aged 34, 7 days in Indonesia from December 14 to 21, 2026, priced from a US residence, with no cancellation option added. Amounts marked "about" are contractual euro limits converted at the live exchange rate, the same conversion the offer cards show, and deductibles are per claim. There is no Suncorp column: the brand sells no travel policy, so there is no limit to compare, and no figure in this table is a Suncorp figure.
Three limits all three of these share

None of them covers an illness you already knew about before departure, so a declared condition needs a different conversation and not a cheaper quote. None of them refunds a trip you cancel beyond the limits in the table above, and on WorldSecure Platinum the cancellation option has to be taken out on the day you book the trip and within 48 hours at the latest. And a policy bought once you have already left does not start at once: Go Explore + applies a five-day waiting period, and WorldSecure Platinum begins on the eighth day.

Price

How much does a replacement for Suncorp travel insurance cost?

Between $27.63 and $85.51 for a week, on the quotes we captured on October 26, 2026 for one traveler aged 34 going to Indonesia. There is no Suncorp figure to set against that, because the brand has nothing left to quote.

HelloSafe data, October 2026. Real quotes computed on October 26, 2026 for one traveler aged 34, 7 days in Indonesia from December 14 to 21, 2026, priced from a US residence, in US dollars, with no cancellation option added. This table prices our own shelf for one trip: it is not a Suncorp quote and it claims no saving against a brand that no longer publishes a price.Your own premium moves with your age, your destination, your dates and the number of travelers, so take the figure from your own quote.

Four things move that number more than the brand on the certificate ever did. Age is the first: WorldSecure Basic stops at 39, WorldSecure Platinum at 65, Go Explore + at 80 and World Travel at 84, and a plan that will not sell to you is not a price at all. Duration is the second, because a week and a month are not priced on the same curve. The destination is the third, since the medical costs of the country you are going to are what the insurer is underwriting. The fourth is what you add: a cancellation limit and a high-risk sports option are real money, and they are the two things a cheap quote has usually left out.

Fine print

Which conditions decide whether a claim gets paid?

Four of them, in every wording we read for this page: when the coverage starts, who approves the care, what the deductible takes off, and how fast you report. None of the four is hidden, and together they decide more claims than the headline ceiling does.

  • A policy bought after departure does not start at once: Go Explore + applies a five-day waiting period and WorldSecure Platinum does not begin until the eighth day, so buying at the airport is not the same as being covered.
  • Hospital care has to be approved, and reported fast: On Go Explore +, any admission must be reported within 24 hours and the care validated by the medical department, which issues the case number the file runs on.
  • The assistance doctor decides the repatriation, not you: The date, the transport and the destination hospital belong to the assistance service, and refusing the solution it proposes brings the personal assistance coverage to an end.
  • Valuables are only covered in a safe or on you: Jewelry, watches and camera equipment sit under a dedicated sub-limit, and a laptop or a phone handed to a carrier is not covered at all.
  • Cancellation has to be bought at the same time as the trip: On WorldSecure Platinum the option must be taken out on the day you book and within 48 hours, and anything that happened between booking and insuring is excluded.
  • A condition you already knew about sits outside all three: On Go Explore +, anything that caused a hospital admission in the six months before departure is excluded, assistance and repatriation included.

The deductible is the other number worth reading before you buy. It is taken off the amount payable rather than added to the premium, so a liability claim on Go Explore + carries about $175 of your own money, a medical claim on World Travel about $58, and a baggage claim about $29 to $35 depending on the plan. On a small claim that is the difference between a payout and a form you filled in for nothing.

  1. Call the assistance service before you commit to anything medical. Expenses incurred without prior approval are not reimbursed, and the case number the medical team issues is what ties the file together.
  2. Report a hospital admission within 24 hours of the date on the admission form. The deadline is in the wording, and force majeure is the only exception it allows.
  3. Report a theft within 48 hours and any other luggage loss within five working days, to the police, the carrier or the ship's purser, and keep the report they give you.
  4. Keep proof of ownership for everything you will claim. Receipts and invoices are what the wording asks for, and the payout is reduced by the deductible once the item has been valued.
  5. Do not admit liability after an incident. Accepting fault or settling without written approval can cost you the coverage.
Reviews

What did customers say about Suncorp travel insurance before it closed?

Not much, and the sample is too small to lean on. ProductReview.com.au, Australia's main review platform, still carries the listing and marks it as no longer operating: 2.5 out of 5 from three reviews, read on October 26, 2026, split 33 percent positive and 67 percent negative.

The sub-scores are customer service 4.0, value for money 3.0 and transparency 3.0, which tells you very little with three reviews behind it. Set that against the volume the brands still trading attract, where one Australian travel insurer can carry several hundred reviews, and the gap is the point: there is no living customer record for this product, because nobody has been able to buy one since 2021.

Treat all of it as sentiment rather than as a coverage fact. What a policy pays is settled by its wording, not by a review count, and the useful question for a reader arriving here is not how the brand was rated. It is what the coverage you buy instead will actually do when you are in a hospital a long way from home.

Contact

Who do you call about an old Suncorp policy?

The general Suncorp line, because there is no travel insurance desk left to call. The travel contact page on suncorp.com.au carries no product information at all now, only the group's general numbers, read on October 26, 2026.

Alternatives

Which travel insurance should you compare instead?

Compare the policy, not the brand. The name on the certificate was never what paid the bill: the medical ceiling, the repatriation clause and the direct billing did, and those three can be read side by side in a few minutes.

Our travel insurance comparison prices the whole shelf for your own dates in one form. If you are weighing the Australian brands that stayed in the market, we have read their wordings the same way: the nib travel insurance review, the Budget Direct travel insurance review, the Southern Cross travel insurance review and the 1Cover travel insurance review each start from the policy document rather than from the marketing.

Which of these we would put in front of a Suncorp search

Start from what you were actually insuring, which is the hospital bill you cannot settle on the spot. Go Explore + is the answer for most readers of this page: about $580,000 of medical care, a hospital stay billed directly so you advance nothing, repatriation paid at actual cost rather than against a ceiling, about $7,000 of search and rescue and a doctor by video included, and it keeps selling to travelers up to 80. World Travel is the pick when age is the obstacle, because it goes on selling up to 84, carries about $2.3 million of personal liability and includes a small cancellation benefit the others leave out. WorldSecure Platinum is the middle road when you want cancellation and high-risk sports written in as options rather than missing, and it carries the largest liability limit of the three. Two honest caveats: neither Go Explore plan refunds a canceled trip at all, and an illness you already knew about before departure is excluded on all three, so a declared condition needs a different conversation. Judge every ceiling on your own dates, destination and age rather than on ours, and take the figure from your own quote on the cards below.

FAQ

What do people still ask about Suncorp and travel insurance?

  • No. Suncorp Group announced on February 9, 2021, with its half-year results, that it would permanently cease underwriting travel insurance under all brands, and the product has not returned. Reading suncorp.com.au on October 26, 2026, the range covers car, home and contents, landlord, renters, strata, life, income protection, funeral and health insurance, plus barristers professional indemnity. There is no travel product, and the old travel address answers with a 404.

  • To simplify what the group sells. The travel exit was announced alongside two others, Suncorp Bank leaving personal loans and Vero leaving Australian consumer and construction policies, and Suncorp said the combined effect would not be material to its results. Its chief executive at the time, Steve Johnston, described the exits as streamlining the business. The announcement used the word permanent.

  • It ran to its end date. Suncorp gave assurances in February 2021 that the announcement would not affect existing travel insurance policies, so coverage already in force continued on its original terms. Since Australian travel policies run for one journey or for twelve months, the last certificates expired during 2021 or 2022. There is no live Suncorp travel policy today.

  • A claim is judged on the wording that applied on the day of the event, not on whether the insurer still sells the product, so an unsettled file from a period when your policy was running does not disappear. Start with general enquiries on 13 11 55 with your certificate of insurance and any case reference to hand. If the outcome is not acceptable, a general insurance dispute in Australia escalates to the Australian Financial Complaints Authority.

  • AAMI and Apia did, on the record. They belonged to the same group, and the February 2021 decision was stated as covering every brand: AAMI had already suspended travel sales in 2020 and its travel product is no longer available, and Apia announced it was permanently ending its travel offering in February 2021. For GIO we found no separate announcement of its own, so take its position from Suncorp’s “all brands” wording rather than from a dated exit. Either way, moving to another brand inside the group is not an option.

  • No. Complimentary coverage attached to a credit card is a separate product with its own booklet and its own activation rules, usually requiring the trip to be paid for with the card, and it is not the standalone policy this page is about. Suncorp Bank itself was sold to ANZ, with the sale completed on July 31, 2024, so the cards that carried that coverage are no longer part of Suncorp Group.

  • A policy with a six-figure medical ceiling, repatriation paid at actual cost and a hospital bill settled directly, so you never advance the money. On the trip we priced on October 26, 2026, Go Explore + carries about $580,000 of medical coverage and about $7,000 of search and rescue and sells up to age 80, World Travel sells up to 84, and WorldSecure Platinum lets you add cancellation and high-risk sports as options. Price your own dates before you choose.

  • For one traveler aged 34 taking a 7-day trip to Indonesia in December 2026, the plans we priced on October 26, 2026 came out between $27.63 and $85.51 for the whole trip. Your own premium depends on your age, the length of the trip, where you are going, how many of you are traveling and whether you add cancellation or a high-risk sports option.

  • Nothing suggests it. The 2021 announcement said the group would permanently cease underwriting travel insurance under all brands, no reversal has been announced since, and the product is absent from suncorp.com.au as read on October 26, 2026. Suncorp has also narrowed further since, selling Suncorp Bank to ANZ on July 31, 2024 to concentrate on insurance in Australia and New Zealand.

  • There is too little evidence left to say, and we do not score a product nobody can buy. The only public record is the ProductReview.com.au listing, now marked as no longer operating, which holds 2.5 out of 5 from three reviews, with customer service at 4.0 and value for money and transparency at 3.0. Three reviews cannot support a verdict, which is why this page carries no rating for the brand.
