What the ranking says

Small, open economies lead: Singapore, Ireland and Luxembourg combine small populations with large financial or multinational sectors. Qatar, Brunei and Guyana owe their place to oil and gas.

GDP per capita is not what residents earn: Ireland's GDP per person is $159,129 but its national income per person is $87,360, as multinational profits leave the country. Switzerland has the highest national income per person in the index ($110,330) and ranks 6th on GDP.

The largest economies: the United States is 9th, Germany 20th, Canada 23rd, France 26th, the United Kingdom 28th, Italy 29th, Japan 34th and Spain 35th. China is 69th ($31,596), Brazil 78th ($24,428) and India 114th ($12,801).

Poland has caught up with Southern Europe: at $59,792 it ranks 33rd, just ahead of Japan and Spain, and Turkey ($46,672) is 49th, above Russia (41st, $52,479) on national income but below it on GDP.

From $1,000 to $173,000: GDP per capita in Singapore is about 170 times that of Burundi. Half of the 178 countries are below $20,725.

How we measure

Methodology

Built by HelloSafe's travel insurance team, independently of our comparison, from public international data, so every figure can be checked at the source.

SourcesIMF World Economic Outlook (GDP per capita in purchasing power parity, current international dollars, 2026 estimates); World Bank WDI (gross national income per capita, Atlas method, current US dollars). Regions as in the HelloSafe Prosperity Index.
Purchasing power parityA dollar in purchasing power parity buys the same amount of goods and services in every country. It corrects for price levels, so it compares living standards better than GDP at market exchange rates, which is usually lower in poorer countries.
Coverage178 countries, the same as the HelloSafe Prosperity Index. GDP per capita is the IMF's 2026 estimate for 174 of them; Afghanistan and Lebanon use 2025, Sri Lanka 2024 and Syria 2010, their latest year.
What this study does not show
  • Micro-states under 100,000 inhabitants are excluded (Monaco, Liechtenstein, San Marino…), as are countries without GDP, national income or HDI data (North Korea, Cuba, South Sudan, Eritrea…), Taiwan and Kosovo: the same 178 countries as the Prosperity Index.
  • GDP per capita is an average: it says nothing about how income is shared. Our Prosperity Index adds income equality, poverty and human development.
  • Ireland's and Luxembourg's GDP is inflated by multinational profits and cross-border workers who live abroad.
  • IMF figures for 2026 are estimates and are revised twice a year; a few countries use the latest available year.
  • Data window: latest release of each source at publication (October 2026).
