The safest cities in the world in 2026
The safest cities in the world in 2026: 60 major cities scored out of 100 on official homicide data and their country's safety context.
What is the safest city in the world in 2026?
- Singapore (97.9), Tokyo (94.9) and Geneva (94.8) are the three safest cities in the world.
- Europe places 7 cities in the top 10: Geneva, Stockholm, Oslo, Zurich, Edinburgh, Copenhagen and Palma. Sydney (9th) completes it.
- Montreal (86.0) is the safest city in North America, Santiago (65.1) the safest in Latin America.
- Every score rests on an official homicide count for the city itself, from UNODC or the national police and statistics offices.
2026 ranking of the safest cities in the world
All 60 cities ranked on the same 0–100 score. Click a city for its rank, its region and its five pillar scores.
Singapore scores 97.9/100, #1 worldwide and #1 in Asia & Oceania. Its strongest pillar is Environmental risk (country) (99.9), its weakest Political stability (country) (95.9). Before you go, look for cover for trip cancellation and early return.
The geography of safe cities
Every ranked city as a point in its tier colour. Click a tier to show or hide it, click a city for its rank and score.
Why do some large cities not appear? A city is ranked only when an official homicide count exists for the city itself. Dubai, Istanbul, Bangkok and Bali are not on the map for that reason. What this study does not show ↓
Safest cities by region
Each region ranked on its own, with each city's place in the world ranking. Europe leads with an average of 86.7, ahead of Asia & Oceania (81.4) and North America (72.7). The country behind each city is scored in our ranking of the safest countries in the world.

Reader service: medical care is the largest cost a traveller can face in the top-ranked cities, from Singapore and Tokyo to Zurich. Compare policies by medical limit with our travel insurance comparison.
The safest cities to visit in 2026
Methodology
Built by HelloSafe's travel insurance team, independently of our comparison. Every figure comes from a public, official source, so the ranking can be reproduced city by city.
Formula City Safety Index = 0.50 × City public safety + 0.19 × Health + 0.15 × Stability + 0.12 × Environment + 0.04 × Cyber
- Only cities with an official homicide count for the city itself are ranked: no national figure stands in for a city. 23 large cities are left out for that reason, among them Dubai, Istanbul, Bangkok, Bali, Beijing and Shanghai.
- Hong Kong (0.25 per 100,000) and Taipei (0.98) have city figures but no country score in the Safety Index, so they are not ranked.
- Homicide is the only crime that can be compared from one country to another; theft, pickpocketing and scams are not measured.
- Data years range from 2022 to 2025: the latest official figure of each city.
- Territories follow each source: the city proper in most cases, the police area for Las Vegas, Dublin and Stockholm, the metropolitan area for Sydney and Lima.
- In small cities a handful of cases moves the rate: Palma recorded 1 homicide, Venice 2, Edinburgh and Florence 3.
- Relative, not absolute: a score compares cities with each other, it does not certify a destination as risk-free.
- Not a travel advisory: always check your government's official advice before travelling.

Frequently asked questions
Singapore tops the HelloSafe City Safety Index 2026 with 97.9 out of 100, ahead of Tokyo (94.9) and Geneva (94.8). It recorded 7 homicides in 2025 for 6.1 million residents, 0.11 per 100,000, the lowest rate of the 60 cities ranked.
Geneva is the safest city in Europe with 94.8 out of 100, 3rd in the world, ahead of Stockholm (92.2) and Oslo (92.1). Seven European cities are in the world top 10.
Montreal is the safest city in North America with 86.0 out of 100, ahead of Toronto (83.7) and Vancouver (82.1). New York (73.8) is the highest-ranked city in the United States, 39th in the world.
Paris ranks 26th of the 60 cities with 85.4 out of 100. Its homicide rate, 1.08 per 100,000 residents in 2023, is close to London’s (1.18) and Berlin’s (1.28). Like any large city, it has pickpocketing, which this index does not measure.
The index only ranks cities with an official homicide count for the city itself. Dubai Police publishes a rate rounded to one decimal, without the number of cases or the population behind it, so the figure cannot be checked and Dubai is not ranked.
Half of the score is the city’s own homicide rate, turned into a 0–100 score. The other half is its country’s context in the HelloSafe Safety Index: health security, political stability, environmental risk and cybersecurity. Every value comes from a public, official source named in the dataset.
