Reading the results

What separates the Middle East's richest countries

The United Arab Emirates leads on almost everything: the region's best human development (96.4) and low poverty (93.8) scores and joint-best income equality (96.9), which place it 9th in the world.

Qatar has the highest GDP per head in the region but ranks 2nd: about $112,300 per person in purchasing power parity, held back by income equality (66.4) and human development (86.3).

Israel is 6th: the second-highest national income (91.0) and human development (92.5) in the region, but income equality (55.1) and poverty (76.0) below the Gulf states'.

Turkey has the widest income gap in the region: 36.2 on income equality (Gini index 43.7), which places it 8th despite a GDP per head of about $46,700.

Syria has the lowest score of the countries shown (39.5): its national income per head is the lowest in the region.

04 · How we score

Methodology

Built by HelloSafe's travel insurance team, independently of our comparison. The scores are those of the world Prosperity Index: a country carries the same score, on the same scale, on both pages. Every figure comes from a public international dataset, so the ranking can be reproduced from the sources.

Score /100= weighted sum30 %GDP per capita (PPP)20 %National income per capita20 %Human development15 %Income equality15 %Low poverty
SourcesIMF World Economic Outlook (GDP per capita in PPP, 2026 estimates), World Bank WDI (GNI per capita, Atlas method), UNDP Human Development Report 2025 (HDI), World Bank Poverty and Inequality Platform (Gini index, share below the societal poverty line). The Middle East has no single definition: this page counts the Arabian Peninsula, the Levant, Iraq, Iran, Turkey and Egypt.
ProcessingIncomes on a log scale, as the UNDP does for the HDI. Min-max 0–100 over the 178 countries of the world index, Gini and poverty inverted, outliers winsorised, a missing inequality or poverty figure filled with the median of the country's World Bank income group.
RobustnessRank correlation of 0.99 with equal weights across the 15 countries; the top 9 is the same.

Formula Prosperity Index = 0.30 × GDP + 0.20 × National income + 0.20 × Human development + 0.15 × Income equality + 0.15 × Low poverty

What this study does not show
  • 14 of the 15 scored countries are shown; the other score stays in the dataset.
  • Colour bands are this page's own (80–100, 70–80, 60–70, under 60).
  • Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman have no inequality survey, so the median of their income group is used.
  • Turkey and Egypt are counted in the Middle East on this page, and in Europe and Africa on the world page and the other regional pages.
  • Gulf figures cover all residents, including foreign workers, who are a majority of the population in several Gulf states.
  • Relative, not absolute: a score compares countries with each other. Prices, cost of living and wealth within a country are not measured.
  • Data window: latest release of each source at publication (October 2026).
