What does my JetBlue Plus card's insurance cover?

Strong cancel. No medical. Here's what that gap costs on international JetBlue routes. Your flight out of Fort Lauderdale gets canceled, mechanical failure two hours before departure. The JetBlue Plus Card covers that: $5,000 per trip for trip cancellation, seven covered reasons, no deductible. The 6-hour trip delay trigger is one of the better thresholds at this price point, better than most $99 competitors that require 12 hours before hotel and meals qualify. Emergency medical abroad is not included. None. A fracture in Cancun or an ER visit in San José runs $8,000 to $30,000, entirely out of pocket, with no reimbursement from this card. Standalone travel insurance with $100,000 in emergency medical coverage starts around $50 for a week-long Caribbean trip. If your JetBlue Plus Card travel insurance use case is domestic cancellations and short delays, the coverage earns its keep. If you travel internationally without separate medical coverage, the gap costs more to close than the $99 annual fee.

What works on travel
  • $5,000 trip cancellation per trip, $10,000 per year: seven covered reasons including sickness, extreme weather, military orders, jury duty, and quarantine. No deductible.
  • $300 trip delay, 6-hour trigger: covers hotel, meals, and transportation while delayed on a licensed common carrier. Most $99 cards require 12 hours.
  • $300 baggage delay, 12-hour trigger: $100 per day for up to three days for essential purchases while your checked bags are in transit. Administered by Broadspire through myclaimsagent.com.
  • $250,000 Travel Accident Insurance (AD&D): covers accidental loss of life, limb, sight, speech, or hearing while traveling on a licensed common carrier. Includes spouse, domestic partner, and dependent children.
  • $5,000 trip interruption per trip: same seven covered reasons as cancellation, reimburses travel back to your return destination or to rejoin traveling companions.
Where travel breaks down
  • No emergency medical abroad: any ER visit, hospitalization, or urgent care outside the US is entirely out of pocket. A single emergency room visit in the Caribbean averages $8,000 to $30,000.
  • No emergency evacuation: medical transport from a remote location to an appropriate facility runs $30,000 to $200,000 on average. No coverage and no assistance payment exist under this card.
  • Pre-existing conditions excluded with a 60-day look-back: any condition that manifested, required diagnosis, or required medication in the 60 days before the trip purchase date is not covered under trip cancellation or interruption.
  • Trip cancellation covers cardholder-initiated cancellations only: if the airline cancels your flight, that is not a covered reason. You must cancel your own trip due to one of the seven covered reasons.
  • Claims reputation below average: multiple CFPB complaints on record document denied claims for hotel-only losses, hurricane resort closures, and COVID cancellations. File the day the event occurs.

Smooth baggage delay claim

The baggage delay benefit kicked in after my bags were late by 5 hours. I submitted receipts for toiletries and clothes, got reimbursed within 3 weeks. Process was straightforward through myclaimsagent.com.

Months of follow-up, no payment

Submitted all documentation three times for a trip I had to cancel after contracting COVID. Kept being told the check had been issued but it never arrived. Couldn't reach anyone responsible after months of follow-up.

FAQ

What people ask about the JetBlue Plus

JetBlue Plus Card travel insurance benefits activate automatically when you pay for your trip with the card. There is no enrollment, registration, or phone call required before you travel. For trip cancellation and interruption, the entire trip cost must be charged to your JetBlue Plus Card, including any remaining charges after applying frequent flier miles or certificates. For trip delay and baggage delay, the entire cost of the passenger fare must be charged to the card. Family members and traveling companions are also covered when their trip costs are charged to the same card and they share your itinerary. Coverage for trip cancellation begins on the date of purchase and ends on the departure date.

Coverage extends to you as the primary cardholder, your spouse or domestic partner, and your dependent children under 19 (or under 26 if enrolled full-time at a college or university). Traveling companions are covered under trip cancellation and interruption when you charge their full trip costs to your JetBlue Plus Card and they share your same itinerary. For Travel Accident Insurance, your spouse or domestic partner and unmarried dependent children are automatically covered whenever you charge the full passenger fare to the card. The benefit applies to Authorized Users on your account as well. Coverage does not extend to friends or business colleagues who book and pay for their own travel independently.

Pay the full rental agreement with your JetBlue Plus Card and decline the collision damage waiver offered at the counter. The card's MasterRental CDW (collision damage waiver) then covers physical damage and theft of the vehicle on a secondary basis in the United States, meaning your personal auto insurance pays first and the card covers the remaining amount, including your deductible. The vehicle must have an MSRP under $50,000 and the rental period cannot exceed 31 consecutive days. Loss of use charges are covered up to $500. Outside the US, if your personal auto policy does not extend internationally, this coverage becomes primary. Trucks, full-size vans, motorcycles, campers, and off-road vehicles are excluded.

For trip cancellation, trip interruption, and trip delay claims, visit MyCardBenefits.com or call 1-800-Mastercard (1-800-627-8372). Report the claim within 60 days of the incident or the claim may not be honored; you have up to 180 days from the date of the event to submit your full documentation. For baggage delay and Travel Accident Insurance claims, contact Broadspire (Crawford) at 1-855-830-3721 or through myclaimsagent.com. Written notice for those claims must be given within 20 days of the loss. Have your covered card billing statement showing the trip charge, a written statement of delay or cancellation cause from the carrier, and itemized receipts ready before you file. Do not wait until you return home.

The JetBlue Plus Card does not include emergency medical coverage abroad or emergency evacuation, the two most financially significant gaps for international travelers. Trip cancellation does not cover pre-existing medical conditions that manifested in the 60 days before your departure date. If the airline cancels your flight, that is not a covered reason for trip cancellation. Under rental car coverage, trucks, full-size vans, motorcycles, campers, off-road vehicles, and vehicles with an MSRP above $50,000 are excluded. Cell phone protection is not included. Under purchase protection, mysterious disappearance and lost items without documented theft are excluded. One-way travel without a return destination is not covered under trip cancellation or interruption.

Yes. The JetBlue Plus Card includes no emergency medical coverage for illness or injury abroad. There is no benefit at all in this category. Any hospital visit, urgent care, or emergency dental treatment outside the United States is paid entirely out of pocket. A gastroenteritis episode in Mexico can cost $3,000 to $8,000 at a private hospital. A fracture or appendectomy runs $15,000 to $60,000 in the Caribbean or Central America. Travelers visiting Mexico, the Caribbean, or Central America without supplemental travel medical coverage are carrying that full financial risk. A standalone travel medical policy with $100,000 in emergency medical coverage typically costs $30 to $80 for a week-long trip.

No. Pre-existing medical conditions are excluded from JetBlue Plus Card trip cancellation and interruption coverage. The Guide to Benefits defines a pre-existing condition as any injury or sickness affecting you, a traveling companion, or a family member traveling with you within the 60 days before the trip purchase date, where the condition required diagnosis, care, or treatment; caused you to take prescribed medication; or required treatment recommended by a physician. If your doctor advises against travel due to a condition that first appeared or was treated in that 60-day window, a cancellation claim will be denied. No pre-existing condition waiver is available under this benefit.

The JetBlue Plus Card rental car coverage is secondary in the United States, meaning your personal auto insurance pays first and the card covers what remains, including your deductible and any amounts above your primary insurer's payout. One practical consequence: a claim will go through your personal insurer and may affect your rate. Outside the United States, if your personal auto policy does not cover international rentals, the card's CDW becomes primary for those trips. If you rent cars frequently in the US and want to avoid involving your personal insurer in any collision claim, a card with primary CDW coverage would be a better fit for that specific use case.

No. The JetBlue Plus Card does not include cell phone protection. Damage, theft, or mechanical breakdown of your phone is not covered by any benefit in this card's Guide to Benefits BAR-5821-3. The card's Purchase Assurance benefit covers theft and accidental damage on items purchased with the card within 90 days, so a phone bought with the card would have that 90-day window. Beyond that window, or for phones not purchased with the card, there is no coverage. If cell phone protection is a priority, you would need a card that includes it specifically, such as certain World Elite or premium cards that add it as a standalone benefit.

Yes, the JetBlue Plus Card includes several travel insurance benefits: trip cancellation and interruption up to $5,000 per trip, trip delay reimbursement of up to $300 after a 6-hour delay, baggage delay coverage of up to $300 after a 12-hour delay, and Travel Accident Insurance of $250,000 for accidental death or dismemberment on a licensed common carrier. The card does not include emergency medical coverage abroad or emergency evacuation coverage. Those two gaps are the most financially significant for international travelers. The included coverage is best suited for JetBlue-focused cardholders doing primarily domestic routes or short Caribbean hops where medical emergencies can be managed through domestic health insurance.
