Expert opinion

Is cancel for any reason travel insurance worth it in 2026?

Cancel for any reason travel insurance is a paid add-on that refunds 50% to 75% of your prepaid, non-refundable trip cost when you cancel for a reason no standard policy covers. It must be bought within days of your first trip payment, and you must cancel at least 48 hours before departure.

Here is the honest version, from our own comparison data. Of the seven plans HelloSafe quotes to US residents, only three cover trip cancellation at all, and exactly one of those carries a cancel for any reason benefit written into the plan itself: the Epic Plan, which reimburses 75% of your insured trip cost. Smart Travel Protection sells cancel for any reason as a separate add-on you tick at checkout. Everything else in our US catalogue, including both Atlas International plans and both Go Explore plans, is rejected by our quote engine the moment you ask for cancellation cover.

So the real decision is not whether cancel for any reason travel insurance is good value in the abstract. It is whether the slice of your trip you cannot get back is big enough to justify a premium that typically rises by 40% to 60%. On a $2,500 trip that is roughly $15 to $25 of extra premium to protect $1,875. On a $600 weekend of refundable hotel bookings it is money you will not see again.

Our view: buy it when the money is genuinely locked, and skip it when it is not. Non-refundable flights, a cruise deposit, a villa with a no-refund clause and a wedding you may not be able to attend are the cases where this add-on pays for itself. A flexible fare and a free-cancellation hotel are not.

Our methodology

We compare the plans we actually distribute, using live quotes from our own pricing engine rather than advertised rates. Every ceiling, exclusion and age limit on this page is read from the plan data and contract wording in our database, and captured in August 2026. We do not rank plans by the commission they pay us.

Our pick for a traveller who wants to walk away

If you want to be able to cancel and still get most of your money back, the Epic Plan is the one to take: it is the only plan we sell to US residents with cancel for any reason written into the policy, at 75% of your insured trip cost, on top of $15,000 of standard trip cancellation and $15,000 of trip interruption. You are also covered to $250,000 for medical care abroad and $700,000 for emergency evacuation, with over 250 activities included.

If price matters more, or if you are over 70, take Smart Travel Protection instead. It starts at $5.16 a day against $12.50, insures travellers up to age 99 where the Epic Plan stops at 70, refunds up to your full trip price for a covered reason, and sells cancel for any reason as an add-on at checkout.

One caveat worth your time: cancel for any reason is not sold in every US state, and the purchase window is short. Decide within two weeks of your first deposit or the option disappears.

Definition

What is cancel for any reason travel insurance and what does it actually cover?

Cancel for any reason travel insurance is an optional upgrade bolted onto a standard trip cancellation policy. The base policy pays 100% of your insured trip cost, but only for a closed list of reasons: illness, injury, death in the family, jury duty, a named natural disaster, sometimes a job loss. The upgrade removes the list. You cancel because you changed your mind, because your dog is sick, because the forecast is bad, and you still get money back.

The trade is that you never get all of it back. Where the base policy refunds 100% of a covered claim, the upgrade refunds a fixed percentage, typically 50% or 75%. Our Epic Plan sits at the top of that range at 75%. If you cancel a $4,000 trip, that is $3,000 returned rather than $4,000, and the $1,000 difference is the price of not having to explain yourself.

HelloSafe plan data, US departure, captured August 2026.The four plans marked No are refused by our quote engine when cancellation cover is requested, with the reason "cancellation coverage not supported".Trip interruption is not cancellation: it pays after you have left, not before.

Two things follow from that table. First, a high medical ceiling tells you nothing about cancellation: the two Atlas plans carry the strongest medical and evacuation limits in our catalogue, a million dollars of evacuation each, and cannot refund a cancelled trip at all. Second, if cancel for any reason is your reason for buying, your shortlist is two plans long.

Conditions

What conditions must you meet to use cancel for any reason cover?

This add-on has the strictest eligibility rules in travel insurance, and they are enforced at the point of sale rather than at the point of claim. Miss one and you cannot buy the cover at all. These are the four that catch people out.

  • Buy inside the purchase window : you have 14 to 21 days from your first trip payment, depending on the plan. Not from the departure date, from the deposit.
  • Insure 100% of your prepaid non-refundable cost : if you declare $3,000 of a $5,000 trip to lower the premium, the upgrade is void.
  • Cancel at least 48 hours before departure : most plans require two to three full days. A cancellation at the airport is not a claim.
  • Cancel the whole trip : you cannot cancel one leg, keep the flights and claim on the hotel.
  • It is not sold in every state : New York and Washington restrict or prohibit it, so the option may not appear at checkout depending on where you live.
  • It never refunds 100% : expect 50% to 75%, and treat any page promising a full refund as describing the base policy, not the upgrade.
  • It does not cover money you can already recover : refundable bookings and airline credits are deducted before the percentage is applied.
  • It cannot be added later : once the window closes, no insurer will sell it to you for that trip, whatever you are willing to pay.
The mistake that voids the cover

Under-declaring the trip cost is the single most common way travellers lose this benefit. The premium is calculated on the insured amount, so declaring less looks like an easy saving. Insurers check the total against your booking documents at claim time, and a shortfall invalidates the cancel for any reason element entirely, leaving you with the standard covered-reasons list you were trying to escape.

Price

How much does cancel for any reason travel insurance cost?

There are two numbers to hold apart: the price of the underlying policy, and the surcharge for the upgrade. The policy prices below are live starting rates from our own engine for a US resident aged 40 travelling seven days to France with $2,500 of prepaid cost, captured in August 2026.

Smart Travel Protection starts at $5.16 a day, so about $36 for that week. The Standard Plan starts at $6.50 a day, about $46. The Epic Plan, the one with cancel for any reason built in, starts at $12.50 a day, about $88 for the week. Those are the base premiums, before the upgrade.

The upgrade itself typically adds 40% to 60% to the premium, and industry pricing puts it at roughly 3% of the trip cost. On our $2,500 example that is somewhere between $15 and $25 of additional premium. What it buys you is 75% of $2,500, which is $1,875 you would otherwise lose entirely.

The arithmetic only works above a threshold. Below roughly $1,000 of genuinely non-refundable cost, the surcharge is a large fraction of what you stand to recover and the upgrade rarely justifies itself. Above $3,000, and particularly on cruises and package holidays where deposits are locked early, it usually does.

Claim

How do you claim on cancel for any reason travel insurance?

The process is mechanical, and the order matters. Cancelling your bookings before you notify the insurer is the mistake that costs people their claim, because the insurer wants to see the trip cancelled within the policy deadline and evidenced.

  1. Notify the insurer before you cancel anything, and get the notification timestamped. This is what proves you cancelled more than 48 hours out.
  2. Cancel every element of the trip: flights, accommodation, transfers, tours. A partial cancellation is not claimable.
  3. Collect the refusals and refunds. Whatever an airline or hotel gives back is deducted from the claim, so the insurer needs the paperwork either way.
  4. File the claim with your booking invoices, the proof of payment, and the cancellation confirmations from each supplier.
  5. Expect the percentage, not the total. Payment lands on the insured non-refundable balance after deductions, at 50% or 75% depending on the plan.

You do not need to give a reason, and you should not invent one. The whole point of the upgrade is that the reason is not assessed. What is assessed is the timing, the completeness of the cancellation and the amount you insured.

FAQ

Cancel for any reason travel insurance: your questions answered

  • It is worth it when a large part of your trip cost is genuinely non-refundable and your likely reason for cancelling is not on the standard covered-reasons list. On a $2,500 trip the upgrade costs roughly $15 to $25 and protects $1,875 at the 75% rate. Below about $1,000 of locked cost it rarely pays for itself.

  • Between 50% and 75% of your insured non-refundable cost, never 100%. The Epic Plan we distribute sits at the top of that range with 75%. Any refunds you obtain directly from airlines or hotels are deducted before the percentage is applied.

  • Within 14 to 21 days of your first trip payment, depending on the plan. The clock starts at the deposit, not at the departure date, and once it runs out no insurer will add the benefit to that trip.

  • Only if you are still inside the purchase window that started with your first payment. If you paid a deposit three weeks ago, the option has almost certainly closed. This is the most common reason travellers cannot buy it.

  • The Epic Plan carries it in the policy at 75% of the insured trip cost. Smart Travel Protection offers it as an add-on selected at checkout. No other plan in our US catalogue offers it, and four of our seven US plans cannot cover trip cancellation at all.

  • New York and Washington restrict or prohibit the sale of this add-on, so it may not be offered at checkout for residents of those states. Availability is set by the insurer’s state filings, not by us.

  • No. That is precisely what you are paying for. The insurer assesses the timing, whether you cancelled the entire trip and how much you insured, but not why you cancelled.

  • Cancellation applies before you leave and refunds prepaid costs. Trip interruption applies once you have departed and covers getting home early and the unused portion of the trip. They are separate benefits with separate limits: our Epic Plan carries $15,000 of each.

  • If the airline cancels, you claim the fare from the airline, and standard cancellation cover handles the knock-on costs. The upgrade exists for when you cancel, not when the airline does.

  • No. The upgrade requires you to insure 100% of your prepaid non-refundable cost. Under-declaring is checked against your booking documents at claim time and invalidates the cancel for any reason benefit.
