Is AA travel insurance worth it in 2026?
AA travel insurance is a mainstream UK policy sold in three levels, Bronze, Silver and Gold, underwritten by Inter Partner Assistance and carrying £10,000,000 of emergency medical and repatriation cover on every level, with cancellation from £1,000 to £5,000 per person.
We rate AA travel insurance 3.9 out of 5. The medical headroom is genuinely large, the cancellation cover is real rather than decorative, and the AA does something most cheap online insurers refuse to do: it screens pre-existing medical conditions and will cover them in writing. For a UK holidaymaker with a hospital history and a paid-for holiday, that combination matters more than a few pounds of premium.
One thing stops it scoring higher, and it is not a small thing. The comparison table on theaa.com advertises medical expenses of up to £15 million on all three of its policy types. The AA Travel Insurance Policy Wording of February 2026, which is the binding document for policies bought from 5 February 2026, sets that benefit at £10,000,000 on Bronze Essential, Silver Essential and Gold Essential alike. We also read the backpacker wording of February 2026 and the older March 2025 wording. Neither contains the figure £15 million anywhere. Read the table of benefits attached to your own schedule before you rely on the headline.
The second reservation is Bronze. It is not a cheaper version of the AA policy, it is a shorter one. Travel disruption, delayed arrival, hospital benefit and the whole of personal accident are shown as No cover on Bronze, and the AA member benefits, the zero excess in particular, are explicitly withheld from it.
- Very high medical ceiling on every level : £10,000,000 of emergency medical and repatriation expenses on Bronze, Silver and Gold alike, which is far above the £2,000,000 that is common in the UK market.
- Pre-existing conditions can actually be covered : the AA screens them by phone on 0330 123 5485 or online and confirms cover in writing, rather than excluding anything that predates the policy.
- Real cancellation cover : £1,000 on Bronze, £3,000 on Silver and £5,000 on Gold per person, per trip.
- Long trips are catered for : 186 days on a single trip, 365 days on the backpacker policy, and 62 days per trip on annual multi-trip.
- An unusually fair refund after the cooling off period : cancel an unused single trip policy after the first 14 days and the AA still refunds 65% of the premium.
- A free doctor in your pocket : the Doctor Please! app gives 24/7 access to a licensed English-speaking GP, included with the policy at no extra cost.
- The £15 million headline is not in the policy wording : the marketing table says up to £15 million, the February 2026 wording says £10,000,000 on all three levels, and so does the March 2025 wording.
- Bronze is stripped, not discounted : no travel disruption, no delayed arrival, no hospital benefit and no personal accident at all, plus the highest excess at £150.
- Member perks are withheld from Bronze : the AA states plainly that the additional member benefits are not available on the Bronze level of travel insurance.
- Personal accident collapses at 65 : even on Gold, the £20,000 death benefit falls to £2,000 once you are over 65, and loss of limbs, loss of sight and permanent total disablement pay nothing at all from 65.
- Low single article limits : £225 on Bronze, £300 on Silver and £400 on Gold, so a laptop or a camera is only partly covered whatever your baggage limit says.
- Popular activities cost extra : winter sports, scuba diving, high diving and ice hockey all require an additional premium, although golf is included as standard.
- Overrun an annual trip and you lose everything : the wording states that if any trip exceeds your maximum number of nights there is no cover for any of that trip, not a reduced payout.
Every year, our experts audit each plan against its binding policy wording: coverage, limits and exclusions, cross-checked with real customer feedback and live market prices. The analysis is fully independent, with zero paid placements and no insurer able to pay to influence a rating. We compare travel insurance across every country and currency, using the plans, prices and cover actually offered in your country, not a single guide translated.
Learn moreWhich AA travel insurance policy should you choose?
Silver is the entry point for most people buying AA travel insurance, because Bronze removes entire sections of the policy rather than lowering their limits, and because the AA member benefits, including the zero excess, start at Silver.
The three levels are not proportional versions of one another. Moving from Bronze to Silver switches on travel disruption, delayed arrival, hospital benefit and personal accident, which are absent from Bronze entirely, and cuts the excess from £150 to £95. Moving from Silver to Gold mostly raises numbers that already exist, and halves the excess again to £50.
Level | Who it actually suits | Excess | What is missing |
|---|---|---|---|
Bronze Essential The headline price | A traveller with nothing expensive pre-booked who only wants the medical and repatriation section | £150 | No travel disruption, no delayed arrival, no hospital benefit, no personal accident, and no AA member benefits |
Silver Essential The realistic entry point | Most UK holidaymakers: £3,000 cancellation, £1,500 baggage, £25,000 legal expenses, and zero excess if you are an AA member | £95 | Winter sports, scuba diving and high diving still cost extra |
Gold Essential The full version | Anyone with an expensive itinerary booked, or who wants the lowest excess and the highest baggage and cancellation limits | £50 | Same paid add-ons as Silver, and personal accident still collapses at 65 |
Two AA-specific rules change the maths. AA members pay no excess at all on Silver and Gold, which turns the £95 or £50 above into zero, but you have to be a member at the time you buy the policy. And the AA takes 10% off when you buy direct online. Neither applies to Bronze.
The AA waives the excess where you use a UK reciprocal health arrangement such as the GHIC, another country’s agreement, or private medical insurance, to reduce your medical costs. Carrying a valid GHIC to Europe is therefore worth real money on an AA policy, not just goodwill.
What does AA travel insurance cover?
AA travel insurance covers emergency medical treatment and repatriation up to £10,000,000 on every level, cancelling or cutting short a trip up to £5,000 per person on Gold, baggage up to £2,500, personal liability up to £2,000,000 and legal expenses up to £25,000, with a 24/7 emergency medical assistance line.
The table below is the AA's own published schedule from the February 2026 policy wording. The excess is shown at the top because it is deducted per person, per incident and per trip, up to two excesses, and because AA members on Silver and Gold pay none of it.
Benefit | Bronze Essential | Silver Essential | Gold Essential |
|---|---|---|---|
Excess Per person, per incident, per trip, max 2 | £150 | £95 | £50 |
Medical emergency and repatriation The core of the policy | £10,000,000 | £10,000,000 | £10,000,000 |
Cancelling or cutting short your trip | £1,000 | £3,000 | £5,000 |
Emergency dental | £200 | £300 | £400 |
Hospital benefit Paid for an inpatient stay, no excess | No cover | £10 per day to £200 | £15 per day to £300 |
Travel disruption | No cover | £3,000 | £5,000 |
Delayed arrival No excess | No cover | £20 after 12 hours, then £10 per 12 hours, to £100 | £20 after 6 hours, then £10 per 6 hours, to £100 |
Missed departure | £300 | £500 | £750 |
Baggage | £500 | £1,500 | £2,500 |
Single article limit The cap on any one item | £225 | £300 | £400 |
Valuables Deducted from the baggage limit | £250 | £300 | £500 |
Essential items lost in transit over 12 hours Outward journey, within the baggage limit | £150 | £200 | £250 |
Cash | £175 | £200 | £300 |
Replacement personal money and documents | £225 | £250 | £400 |
Legal expenses Doubled if the policy covers two or more people | £10,000 | £25,000 | £25,000 |
Personal liability | £1,000,000 | £2,000,000 | £2,000,000 |
Personal accident, death No excess | No cover | £10,000 £2,000 if under 16 or over 65 | £20,000 £2,000 if under 16 or over 65 |
Loss of limbs or sight, permanent total disablement | No cover | £10,000 No cover if 65 or over | £20,000 No cover if 65 or over |
Winter sports, optional extra premium Owned ski equipment | £500 | £600 | £750 |
Baggage looks generous at £2,500 on Gold, but no one item is paid above £400, and £225 on Bronze. A £900 laptop, a £700 camera or a £500 phone is settled at the single article limit, not at its value. Valuables such as jewellery, watches, cameras and phones are capped separately again, at £250 to £500, and that amount comes out of the baggage limit rather than sitting on top of it.
What other types of AA travel insurance are there?
Beyond the three cover levels, AA travel insurance is sold in three trip shapes, annual multi-trip, single trip and backpacker, and each one changes the trip length you are allowed and the personal accident limit you get.
Policy type | What it is for | The longest trip | The condition to know |
|---|---|---|---|
Annual multi-trip Unlimited trips over 12 months | People who take several holidays a year from a UK base | 62 days per trip | If any single trip exceeds your maximum number of nights, there is no cover for any part of that trip |
Single trip One journey | The standard holiday, and long stays of up to six months | 186 days | Cover ends when the trip ends, and every trip must start and finish at your home in the UK |
Backpacker Extended travel | Gap years and long overland trips | 365 days | Personal accident drops to £10,000, baggage to £1,500 and cancellation to £2,500, and you get a maximum of three visits home of up to 31 days each, with cover suspended while you are back |
Winter sports Optional section | Skiing and snowboarding on any of the above | 17 days of winter sports per insurance period | Only applies if the extra premium is shown on your policy schedule, and without it there is no medical cover for a skiing injury at all |
Golf Included | Golfing holidays | Same as the underlying policy | Covered as standard, with no additional premium |
The backpacker policy deserves a closer look before you assume it is simply the single trip policy stretched. Its cancellation limits are lower at £1,000, £1,500 and £2,500, its baggage limits are lower at £500, £1,000 and £1,500, and its excess structure is different again at £125, £95 and £75. The medical figure, £10,000,000, is the one number that does not move.
What does AA travel insurance not cover?
AA travel insurance does not cover any pre-existing medical condition you have not declared and had accepted in writing, anything on the Bronze level beyond medical, cancellation, baggage, liability and legal cover, or any trip on an annual policy that runs past your maximum number of nights.
The pre-existing conditions rule is the one that decides most disputed claims, and the AA's wording is unusually blunt about the consequence. It reads: if you fail to declare all pre-existing medical conditions the AA may refuse to deal with or reduce the amount of any relevant claims, even if a claim is not related to an undisclosed pre-existing medical condition. Declaring is not optional paperwork, it is the condition on which the rest of the policy rests.
The AA will cover pre-existing conditions, but only if you call 0330 123 5485 or complete the online medical screening and the AA agrees in writing. Separately, there is no cover under cancellation, medical or personal accident if a doctor has advised you not to travel, if you or a close relative or travelling companion are on a waiting list or know you need surgery, treatment or investigation, or if a terminal prognosis has been given. Those three apply whether or not you declare.
- Travel against FCDO advice : where the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office advises against all travel, cover is excluded under every section except a cancellation claim caused by new FCDO advice.
- Riding without a helmet or travelling without a seatbelt : no claim is paid where you were not wearing a helmet on a motorcycle, moped, scooter, Segway or bicycle, as driver or passenger, or not wearing a seatbelt where one was available.
- Alcohol, drugs and solvents : any claim arising from consumption that impaired your physical ability or judgement, from abuse, or from dependence and withdrawal.
- Heavier manual work : lifting or carrying over 25 kg, power tools or machinery, scaffolding or ladders, working above 6 metres, electrical or construction work, and anything underground.
- A package holiday cancelled by the travel provider : if the operator cancels, or you cannot travel because FCDO advice changed, the AA points you back to the operator rather than paying the cost of the package.
- Activities you did not pay for : winter sports, scuba and mixed gas diving to 40 metres, high diving and ice hockey all need an additional premium. Cave diving and diving with sharks are excluded outright, and scuba is not covered if you dive alone.
- Drones and crypto : any claim arising directly or indirectly from a drone, and any virtual currency including cryptocurrency, are both excluded by name.
- Loss of enjoyment : the cost of a ruined holiday, poor weather, lost earnings after an injury and the cost of preparing your claim are all outside the policy.
One more exclusion sits outside the policy document. AA travel insurance covers UK residents only, and the AA defines the UK as England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands. If you have moved abroad, the policy does not follow you, and you would be looking at expatriate cover instead.
How much does AA travel insurance cost?
AA travel insurance is priced individually and the AA publishes no price list, so the only honest answer is that your premium comes from a quote. What is published, and what you can act on, are the two levers that move it by a fixed amount: 10% off for buying direct online, and no excess at all for AA members on Silver and Gold.
We say that deliberately rather than printing a number. The AA prices only through a full underwritten journey that includes medical screening, and we would not put a figure on this page that we had not captured ourselves. Third party quote tests circulate, but they are not the AA's own price and we do not treat them as one.
- Buy direct and online : the AA advertises 10% off when you buy direct online, so going through the AA's own site rather than a comparison journey is worth a tenth of the premium.
- Be an AA member when you buy : members pay no excess on Silver and Gold. On a £600 medical claim with two people affected, that is up to £190 of Silver excess you do not pay. The benefit is not available on Bronze, and you must be a member at the moment of purchase.
- Carry a GHIC to Europe : the AA waives the excess where a reciprocal health arrangement, another country's agreement or private medical insurance reduces your medical costs.
- Check whether you actually need Gold : Gold buys you £2,000 more cancellation cover, £1,000 more baggage and a £45 lower excess than Silver. If nothing expensive is pre-booked, Silver already carries the same £10,000,000 medical limit.
AA travel insurance against a real HelloSafe quote, same trip
Because we cannot capture an AA premium, the table below compares what each side actually gives you for one identical trip, with a real price on the side where we have one. The trip is a UK resident aged 45 travelling to Spain from 5 to 19 October 2026, and the AA column is Gold Essential, its fullest cover level.
AA Gold Essential | WorldSecure Platinum, via HelloSafe | |
|---|---|---|
Price for the trip 14 days, 1 traveller aged 45 | Quote only, no published price | £47.05 |
Emergency medical and repatriation | £10,000,000 | about £261,000 |
Cancellation | £5,000 per person | Option only, up to the trip price, capped at about £7,835 per person |
Excess | £50, or nothing for AA members | No excess on the medical section |
Hospital bills paid direct, no money to advance | Assistance arranges treatment, you may still be billed | Included |
Baggage Single article limit in brackets | £2,500 (£400) | about £1,740 (phones, cash and cards excluded) |
Personal liability | £2,000,000 | about £3,917,000 |
Pre-existing medical conditions | Screened and covered in writing | Excluded outright, with no declaration route |
Risky sports | Extra premium, scuba to 40 metres | Option at subscription, £49.30 on an equivalent 14 day trip |
Maximum age | No upper limit published | Under 66 |
The honest reading is that this is not a page where we undercut the AA and call it a win. We can name a real price, £47.05, and the AA cannot be compared on price without a quote. Where we clearly do better is the excess, the personal liability limit and the fact that hospital bills are settled directly so you never advance the money. Where the AA is clearly better is the medical ceiling, roughly thirty-eight times higher, the cancellation section, and above all pre-existing conditions.
Our WorldSecure Platinum contract excludes accidents and illnesses that occurred before the policy start date, for every guarantee, with no route to declare them. The AA screens your conditions and confirms cover in writing. If you have a heart condition, a cancer history or anything on a waiting list, the AA is the product that exists for you and ours is not. The same is true of cancellation: when we required cancellation cover on the identical trip, our UK comparison returned no plan at all.
How does AA travel insurance pay a claim?
AA travel insurance claims go through the AA claims centre on 0330 123 5751, with a separate 24/7 emergency medical assistance line on +44 (0)330 123 5751 that you should call before committing to any treatment abroad.
- For a medical emergency abroad, call the Emergency Medical Assistance Service on +44 (0)330 123 5751 before treatment. The AA is explicit that where public treatment is available you should take it, and that if you are offered a choice between public and private care and choose private, it may not cover the claim.
- For a cancellation on medical grounds, see a doctor first and get confirmation that cancelling is medically necessary. For any other reason, call the claims team as soon as you know, because cancellation charges rise the closer you get to departure.
- For theft, report it to the local police and get a written report. For anything that happens to checked luggage, get a Property Irregularity Report from the airline, at the airport if you can.
- Gather the evidence the AA names for your claim type: the original booking invoice showing your travel dates for every claim, original medical bills and a medical report for medical claims, cancellation invoices for cancellation, and proof of ownership for baggage.
- Call the AA claims centre on 0330 123 5751, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm, with your policy number. Claims evidence is at your own expense, and you must tell the AA about any other insurance under which you could also claim.
Expect the excess to be taken per person, per incident and per trip, capped at two excesses, so one event affecting two travellers is reduced twice. If you are an AA member on Silver or Gold, that deduction is zero. Policies bought up to 2 April 2023 use a different claims line, 0330 058 2991, and a different emergency medical number, +44 (0)147 335 6274.
What do customers say about AA travel insurance?
The AA Insurance Trustpilot profile holds a TrustScore of 4.6 out of 5 across 46,667 reviews, 71% of them five star and 8% one star, checked on 30 August 2026. That profile covers car, home, life and travel insurance together, so it is not a travel-specific score and should not be read as one.
The consistent praise is for the buying experience: clear quotes, staff who explain what is and is not covered, and a website people can get through without help. The recurring complaint is price movement, customers reporting that a quote rose noticeably once they amended details or came to renew. Neither pattern tells you much about how a travel claim is handled, because far more people buy than claim.
The more useful third-party signal for this product is Fairer Finance, a ratings agency that scores policies on the quality of the cover and the wording rather than on price. It has awarded AA Travel Insurance a 5 Star Rating for the Silver and Gold cover levels. Bronze does not carry that rating, which is consistent with what the benefit table shows.
A travel insurance score is dominated by people reviewing the purchase, not the claim. Read the one star reviews first and look only at whether they describe a claim, and how it ended. On a combined profile like the AA’s, also check whether the review is about travel cover at all, because most of them are about car and home policies.

Three identity details are worth keeping, because they decide who is actually on the hook. AA Travel Insurance is a trading style of Automobile Association Insurance Services Limited, FCA Financial Services Register number 310562. The policy is underwritten by Inter Partner Assistance S.A., PRA firm reference number 202664, a company regulated by the National Bank of Belgium and part of the AXA Group. The policy is administered by ROCK Insurance Group in Crawley, which is the address the wording gives for cancelling. The AA sells it, AXA carries the risk, and Rock runs the paperwork.
How do you cancel an AA travel insurance policy?
An AA travel insurance policy can be cancelled at any time on 0330 123 5485, with a full refund inside 14 days of the start date or of receiving the documents, whichever is later, provided you have not travelled and have not made or intend to make a claim.
What makes the AA unusual is what happens after those 14 days. Most UK travel policies refund nothing once the cooling off period has passed. The AA's February 2026 wording states that if you cancel a single trip policy after the first 14 days it refunds 65% of the premium paid, again provided you have not travelled and no claim has been made. On an annual multi-trip policy it refunds a proportion based on the number of complete months left, provided you are not on a trip at the time.
If your trip falls through for a reason the cancellation section does not cover, you are not forced to keep a policy you cannot use. Cancel the single trip policy instead and the AA returns roughly two thirds of the premium. Do it before you travel and before any claim, because either one removes the right.
Automatic renewal is on by default if you selected it, and you opt out on 0330 123 5485, by email, or through your online account. Cancelling by writing goes to AA Travel Insurance, ROCK Insurance Group, Griffin House, 135 High Street, Crawley, West Sussex RH10 1DQ.
What do people ask most about AA travel insurance?
AA travel insurance is a solid mainstream UK policy and we rate it 3.9 out of 5. It scores well on emergency medical and repatriation cover of £10,000,000 on every level, on real cancellation cover of up to £5,000 per person on Gold, and on the fact that pre-existing medical conditions can be screened and covered in writing. It loses marks because its marketing table advertises up to £15 million of medical cover while the February 2026 policy wording states £10,000,000, because the Bronze level removes travel disruption, delayed arrival, hospital benefit and personal accident entirely, and because personal accident benefits are cut or removed from age 65. Fairer Finance rates the Silver and Gold levels 5 stars.
AA travel insurance is underwritten by Inter Partner Assistance S.A., which is authorised and regulated by the National Bank of Belgium, authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority under firm reference number 202664, and part of the AXA Group. Its UK branch is at 106-118 Station Road, Redhill RH1 1PR. The policy is sold by Automobile Association Insurance Services Limited, FCA Financial Services Register number 310562, and administered by ROCK Insurance Group in Crawley. So the AA is the brand and the broker, AXA carries the risk.
The AA’s own product comparison table on theaa.com advertises medical expenses of up to £15 million. The binding AA Travel Insurance Policy Wording of February 2026 sets that benefit at £10,000,000 on Bronze Essential, Silver Essential and Gold Essential. We also checked the February 2026 backpacker wording and the March 2025 wording, and the figure £15 million appears in neither. £10,000,000 is still a very high ceiling by UK standards, but you should read the table of benefits attached to your own policy schedule rather than the marketing page.
The AA does not publish an upper age limit on its travel insurance pages, which puts it ahead of many UK insurers that stop at 65 or 70. There is an age effect inside the policy, though. Even on Gold, the personal accident death benefit falls from £20,000 to £2,000 once you are over 65, and loss of limbs, loss of sight and permanent total disablement pay nothing at all from 65. Medical, cancellation, baggage and liability cover are not age-reduced in the table of benefits.
Yes, but only if you declare them and the AA agrees in writing. You screen them by calling 0330 123 5485 or by completing the online medical screening. The consequence of not declaring is severe and the wording spells it out: the AA may refuse or reduce any relevant claim even if the claim is unrelated to the undisclosed condition. Separately, there is no cover where a doctor advised you not to travel, where you or a close relative or travelling companion are on a waiting list or know surgery or investigation is needed, or where a terminal prognosis has been given.
The AA does not run public promotional codes for travel insurance in the way some brokers do. It advertises 10% off when you buy direct online, which is applied automatically rather than by a code. The bigger saving is membership: AA members pay no excess at all on Silver and Gold, which is worth up to £190 on a single incident affecting two people on Silver, but you must be a member at the time you buy and the benefit is not available on Bronze.
An AA single trip policy covers one journey of up to 186 days. The backpacker policy covers up to 365 days, with a maximum of three visits home of up to 31 days each and cover suspended while you are back in the UK. An annual multi-trip policy covers unlimited trips of up to 62 days each. The annual limit is strict: the wording states that if any trip exceeds your maximum number of nights there is no cover under the policy for any of that trip, so a 65 day trip on a 62 day policy is uninsured from day one, not from day 63.
Not as standard. Winter sports is an optional section that only applies if the extra premium appears on your policy schedule, and the AA states plainly that without it you have no medical cover for a skiing injury at all, since winter sports is excluded from every section of the policy. Scuba and mixed gas diving to 40 metres cost an additional premium and require you to be qualified or accompanied by an instructor, never diving alone, with cave diving and diving with sharks excluded outright. High diving and ice hockey also cost extra. Golf, jet boating and powerboating are covered as standard.
Yes. Inside 14 days of the start date or of receiving your documents, whichever is later, you get a full refund provided you have not travelled and have made no claim. After that, the AA is more generous than most: it refunds 65% of the premium on a single trip policy, and a proportion based on the complete months remaining on an annual multi-trip policy, on the same conditions. Cancel on 0330 123 5485 or by email to AAtravel.ins@rockinsurance.com.
What is the best alternative to AA travel insurance?
The best alternative to AA travel insurance depends on one question: is anyone travelling carrying a pre-existing medical condition. If nobody is, our comparison prices UK cover from £47.05 for the fortnight in Spain we tested. If somebody is, you need an insurer that screens, and that is a shorter list.
Which alternative we would actually pick, and when
If you are healthy and heading off for a fortnight with nothing expensive pre-booked, WorldSecure Platinum does the job for £47.05 on the exact trip we priced against the AA, it settles hospital bills directly so you never front the money, and it carries about £3,917,000 of personal liability against the AA’s £2,000,000. If you want the biggest medical ceiling in our own shortlist rather than the AA’s, Safe Start carries about £435,000 for £38.30 and adds about £10,450 of trip interruption cover. If you are 66 or over, World Travel is the one of the three that will still quote you, at £68.95, and it includes about £1,306 of cancellation cover as standard. And if you have a heart condition, a cancer history or anything on a waiting list, take the AA or another screening insurer: we would rather tell you that than sell you a policy that excludes the very thing you are worried about.
