Verdict

Is Avanti travel insurance worth it in 2026?

Avanti travel insurance will cover a British traveller at almost any age, including one with declared medical conditions. Its real dividing line is not health but trip length: how long you are going decides which Avanti product you can buy, and how old you are decides how long that can be.

Avanti has been selling travel insurance since 2009, first from Braintree in Essex and, since a change of ownership in 2017, from Northamptonshire. The policies are arranged by TICORP Limited in Gibraltar and administered by Howserv Limited in the United Kingdom, the same operation behind Staysure. That is worth knowing before you price the two brands against each other, because they are not two independent opinions of your risk.

Read as a contract rather than as a quote screen, Avanti is a well-built mid-market product with an unusually generous ceiling on cancellation. Deluxe carries £7,500 of cancellation cover with no excess at all, which is more cancellation cover than most pan-European policies sold to UK residents manage. Its awards record is real too: Best Travel Insurance at the Personal Finance Awards 2024/25, a seventh consecutive win, plus Best Customer Service in 2025 and a Defaqto 5 star rating on Deluxe.

The weaknesses are administrative rather than contractual, and none of them appear on the quote screen. Auto-renewal is switched on when you buy unless you opt out. Changing the policy by phone costs £15. And once the 14 day cooling-off period has passed there is no refund at all, not even a pro-rata one.

Avanti travel insurance in 30 seconds

⭐ Our expert rating: 4.1 / 5. Strong cancellation cover and no stated age ceiling, marked down for trip-length caps that tighten with age and for policy admin that costs money.
🎯 What it is for: travellers over 50, including those with conditions to declare, on trips that fit inside its duration bands.
🛡️ Cover levels: three. Essentials (£5m medical, £1,000 cancellation, £150 excess), Classic (£10m, £5,000, £75 excess), Deluxe (unlimited medical, £7,500 cancellation, no excess).
⏱️ Trip length: the real constraint. Up to 550 days on a single trip at 65 and under, 184 to 366 days at 66 to 70, and 123 to 366 days at 71 to 75, depending on where you are going.
💷 Price: no published tariff for a given trip. Avanti advertises single trip cover from £9.98, which is an entry headline, not a quote for an older traveller.
👥 Less suited to: annual multi-trip buyers of 71 and over, who are capped at 35 days per trip, and anyone whose plans tend to change after the first fortnight.

What Avanti does well

  • Cancellation cover that keeps up with a real holiday : £5,000 on Classic and £7,500 on Deluxe, against the £1,306 carried by the cheapest pan-European policy our comparator quoted for a UK resident on 22 August 2026.
  • No stated maximum age : Avanti's own FAQ says there is no upper age limit for cover, which puts it in the small group of UK insurers still quoting travellers in their 80s and 90s.
  • A nil excess at the top tier : Deluxe applies no excess to any section, so a £200 baggage claim actually pays £200.
  • Long single trips are genuinely allowed : up to 550 days for travellers of 65 and under, which is long-stay territory rather than holiday cover.
  • Activities included rather than sold back to you : bungee jumping and jet skiing are named as covered as standard, on a product aimed at over-50s.
  • An award record that is independently awarded : Personal Finance Awards Best Travel Insurance for a seventh consecutive year in 2024/25, Best Customer Service in 2025, and Moneyfacts provider of the year in 2021 and 2022.

Where Avanti falls short

  • The trip-length cap steps down at 71 : an annual multi-trip policy allows 50 days per trip up to age 70 and only 35 days from 71, which is a hard cliff for anyone who winters abroad.
  • No refund after 14 days : outside the cooling-off period Avanti does not refund the unused portion of the premium, where a pro-rata refund is common elsewhere in the UK market.
  • Auto-renewal is on by default : it is applied at purchase unless you opt out, with the payment taken the day before your current policy expires.
  • £15 to change anything by phone : amendments made through the contact centre carry an administration fee, waived only if you make the change yourself in a MyAvanti account.
  • Essentials is thinner than it looks : £1,000 of cancellation cover and a £150 excess mean a £140 claim pays nothing and a £2,000 cancelled holiday is half uninsured.
  • Its own pages disagree on the activity list : the single trip product page says 85 sports and activities are covered as standard while the FAQ says over 60, so only the policy wording issued with your policy is binding.
Our methodology

Every year, our experts audit each plan against its binding policy wording: coverage, limits and exclusions, cross-checked with real customer feedback and live market prices. The analysis is fully independent, with zero paid placements and no insurer able to pay to influence a rating. We compare travel insurance across every country and currency, using the plans, prices and cover actually offered in your country, not a single guide translated.

Behind the brand

Who actually provides Avanti travel insurance?

Avanti travel insurance is a brand, not an insurer. The policies are arranged by TICORP Limited, a Gibraltar company regulated by the Gibraltar Financial Services Commission and registered with the Financial Conduct Authority under reference 663617, and they are administered in the United Kingdom by Howserv Limited, itself authorised under FCA reference 599282.

This matters for one practical reason. Howserv also runs Staysure, and both brands sit under TICORP. If you are shopping around by putting Avanti and Staysure side by side, you are comparing two retail fronts of the same distribution business rather than two separate underwriting views of you as a risk. Our Staysure travel insurance review sets out where the two product ranges genuinely diverge.

The company that actually carries the risk is named in the policy wording issued with your policy, and it can change between policy years. Avanti's separate Avanti Go product is underwritten by Great Lakes Insurance SE, part of the Munich Re group, with ERGO Travel Insurance Services Limited administering it. Do not assume the underwriter on a document you found online is the one on your own schedule.

Read the schedule, not the brand

A travel insurance brand tells you who sold you the policy. Three separate names decide what happens when you claim: the intermediary who arranged it, the administrator who handles the paperwork, and the insurer who pays. All three are printed on the documents you receive at purchase. If you cannot find the insurer’s name on your own schedule, call before you travel, not after something has gone wrong.

Cover levels

Which Avanti travel insurance policy should you choose?

Avanti travel insurance is sold in three cover levels: Essentials, Classic and Deluxe. The medical ceiling rises from £5m to unlimited across them, but the numbers that change your actual outcome are the excess (£150, then £75, then nothing) and the cancellation cap (£1,000, then £5,000, then £7,500).

Avanti cover levels, from Avanti's published single trip and annual multi-trip cover tables, checked 22 August 2026.Missed departure cover is £1,000 on Classic and £1,500 on Deluxe and is not offered on Essentials. Personal liability is £2m on all three levels. COVID-19 cover is included on all three. All limits are per person, per trip.

The Essentials tier is where most of the disappointment on this product lives. A £150 excess applies per person and per claim section, so a £140 baggage claim pays nothing at all, and a £2,000 holiday cancelled for a covered reason is refunded to half its value. It is a workable policy for a £300 weekend in Dublin and a poor one for anything you have actually saved up for.

Moving up to Classic is the upgrade that changes real outcomes: five times the cancellation cover, half the excess, and missed departure cover that Essentials does not carry at all. Deluxe earns its price on two things only, the nil excess and the £7,500 cancellation ceiling, which is the figure to weigh if you have booked a cruise or a long-haul tour. Our guide to travel cancellation insurance explains which reasons those caps actually pay out on.

Cover

What does Avanti travel insurance actually cover?

Avanti travel insurance covers emergency medical costs and repatriation, cancellation and curtailment, personal baggage, money and passport, personal liability up to £2m, and a long list of sports and activities as standard, with every limit set by the cover level you choose rather than by your medical declaration.

Avanti limits: Avanti's published cover tables on its single trip and annual multi-trip pages, checked 22 August 2026.HelloSafe column: the best limit available on the policies our comparator actually quoted for a UK resident on 22 August 2026, shown in pounds at the live exchange rate.* Avanti does not publish a travel delay limit in its summary cover tables; the figure appears only in the full policy wording.

Sources: Avanti's published cover tables and FAQs (avantitravelinsurance.co.uk, 22 August 2026); HelloSafe live quotes captured the same day for a UK resident, 21 days in Spain.

The honest read of that table is that Avanti's medical headline is the least useful number on it. An unlimited ceiling sounds like the whole product, but emergency treatment and an air ambulance home from Europe rarely pass six figures, and a policy quoting about £261,000 to £435,000 of medical cover is already well past any realistic bill. Every UK traveller should also carry a European Health Insurance Card, which removes a slice of the state-hospital bill in Europe before any excess is applied.

Where the table gets interesting is cancellation. Avanti Deluxe carries £7,500, which is far ahead of the UK market average, and it is genuinely the reason to buy Avanti for an expensive trip. What surprised us is that it is not unique: WorldSecure Platinum, quoted through our comparator at £62.75 for 21 days in Spain at 65, carries about £7,836 of cancellation cover and about £1,741 of baggage cover. On that trip you can have Deluxe-level cancellation without the Deluxe premium, provided you are 65 or under.

Trip length

How long can you travel on an Avanti travel insurance policy?

Avanti travel insurance caps trip length by age: a single trip policy runs up to 550 days at 65 and under, 184 to 366 days between 66 and 70, and 123 to 366 days between 71 and 75, while an annual multi-trip policy allows 50 days per trip up to age 70 and only 35 days per trip from 71.

This is the part of the product that decides most purchases and the part almost nobody reads before buying. Avanti advertises that it has no upper age limit, and that is true of eligibility. It is not true of duration. The older you are, the shorter the trip Avanti will write.

Product and age band
Maximum length of one trip
What it means in practice

Age 0 to 65
Up to 550 days
Genuine long-stay cover: a sabbatical, a winter abroad, or an extended tour on one contract
Single trip or long stay
Age 66 to 70

Still generous. The shorter figure applies to the widest cover areas, so check the area before you book
Single trip or long stay
Age 71 to 75

A four-month floor. Enough for a European winter, not enough for a year away in some areas
Annual multi-trip

Two or three long holidays a year fit comfortably inside this
Annual multi-trip
Age 71 and over
35 days per trip, 183 travel days a year
The cliff edge: a six-week stay no longer fits on an annual policy at all
Trip-length limits published in Avanti's FAQs and on its annual multi-trip page, checked 22 August 2026. The single trip and long stay bands vary by destination area, so the lower figure applies to the widest areas. The 183 day annual total is a limit on total travel days per policy year, separate from the per-trip cap.
The 35 day cap is the one that catches people

A couple who take a six week break in Portugal every winter can hold an Avanti annual multi-trip policy at 70 and lose the ability to use it at 71, because the per-trip cap drops from 50 days to 35. Nothing about the renewal price flags it. If your habit is one long stay rather than several short ones, price a single trip policy against the annual one every year from 70 onwards, and check the cap before you renew anything.

Our own pricing data shows why that arithmetic is worth doing. Quoting a UK resident aged 70 for a trip to Spain on 22 August 2026, the cheapest policy our comparator returned cost £162.82 for 31 days, and exactly the same £162.82 for 50 days and for 60 days. The plan prices in duration bands, so between roughly a month and two months the extra weeks are free. Meanwhile an annual multi-trip policy for the same traveller was quoted at £1,280.52. On a single long stay, the annual product is not the saving it is assumed to be, and our guide to annual multi-trip travel insurance sets out where the break-even actually sits.

Activities

Which sports and activities does Avanti travel insurance cover?

Avanti travel insurance includes a long list of sports and activities as standard on every cover level, though Avanti's own pages disagree on the number: its single trip product page says 85 activities are covered as standard while its FAQ says over 60. Winter sports are free only on Classic and Deluxe annual policies.

  • Included at no extra cost : the standard activity list covers ordinary holiday activity and stretches as far as bungee jumping and jet skiing, which most over-50s policies treat as an upgrade.
  • Winter sports free on annual policies : Classic and Deluxe annual multi-trip policies include winter sports cover at any age, with no age loading.
  • Off-piste is possible : off-piste skiing is covered when you are supervised by a professional guide, at a recognised resort, on a policy that carries winter sports cover.
  • Cruise cover exists as a specific product : Avanti sells dedicated cruise policies rather than leaving cruise-specific risks to a general holiday policy.
  • Winter sports is a paid add-on on single trip : the free winter sports cover applies to annual policies, so a one-week ski holiday bought as a single trip costs extra.
  • Off-piste without a guide is out : unsupervised off-piste skiing falls outside the cover, which is the exclusion most skiers discover after the fact.
  • Gadget cover is separate : cameras, tablets and phones beyond the personal baggage single-item limits need the gadget add-on.
  • The activity count is not contractual : with 85 on one page and over 60 on another, the only list that binds anyone is the one in the policy wording sent with your policy.

For comparison, our own comparator handles activity cover as a filter rather than a list. Ticking the extreme sports option for a UK resident aged 65 travelling 21 days to Spain returned WorldSecure Platinum at £65.74 on 22 August 2026, with adventure activities included in the contract rather than added to it. The same search for a traveller of 70 returned nothing at all, which is worth saying plainly: on adventure cover past 70 the specialist UK market, Avanti included, is currently better served than the pan-European market we compare. If activities are the point of your trip, read our guide to extreme sports travel insurance before you choose on price.

Exclusions

What is not covered by Avanti travel insurance?

Avanti travel insurance excludes anything arising from a medical condition you did not declare, any trip longer than your age band allows, and the excess on every claim except on Deluxe, which carries none.

  • Undeclared medical conditions : Avanti requires you to declare anything you have been treated for or taken medication for in the last two years, plus every cardiovascular or circulatory condition whenever it started, regardless of how long ago.
  • The policy excess : £150 per person on Essentials and £75 on Classic, applied to each claim section, so small claims on the entry tier are effectively uninsured.
  • Trips beyond your age band : the per-trip caps are contractual limits, not guidance, so a 40 day trip on an annual policy at 71 is outside the cover from day 36.
  • Cancellation above your tier's cap : £1,000 on Essentials is a hard ceiling however much the holiday cost.
  • Unsupervised off-piste skiing : off-piste is covered only under professional supervision at a recognised resort, on a policy carrying winter sports cover.
  • Trips against Foreign Office advice : destinations under an active advisory against travel are outside the cover, as with every UK policy.
  • Undocumented claims : baggage, money and delay claims need receipts and a police or carrier report, and are refused without them.
  • Anything after the cooling-off period, if you change your mind : this is not a claims exclusion but it works like one, because there is no refund and no downgrade of cover after 14 days.

The medical declaration rule deserves one extra line, because its second half is unusual. Most UK insurers ask about the last two years. Avanti also asks about every cardiovascular and circulatory condition you have ever had, with no time limit at all, which sweeps in a heart event from twenty years ago that another insurer would never see. Declare it. Our guide to travel insurance with a pre-existing medical condition explains how the two underwriting models differ.

Price

How much does Avanti travel insurance cost?

Avanti travel insurance publishes no tariff for a given trip. It advertises single trip cover from £9.98 and runs promotions of up to 20% off on its own product pages, but the price you actually pay is built from your age, your destination, your trip length and your medical declaration.

One pricing detail is worth flagging because it rarely is. Avanti offers monthly payment on policies above £80 through Premium Credit Limited, at a representative 24.9% APR on a £200 policy. That is a credit agreement, not an instalment plan, and on a travel policy it can add more to the cost than the promotional discount takes off.

Because Avanti will not produce a number without a full quote, the honest comparison is between its published constraints and what our own comparator actually returned for the same traveller. The table below prices one UK resident aged 70 travelling to Spain, at six trip lengths, on 22 August 2026.

HelloSafe prices are real quotes captured on 22 August 2026 for a 5 October 2026 departure, 1 traveller aged 70, departing the United Kingdom, shown in pounds.* Avanti publishes no price list. Its advertised entry price of £9.98 for a single trip policy is a headline starting figure across all ages and destinations, not a quote for a 70-year-old, and a real Avanti price exists only after a full quote and medical declaration.Policies are pan-European: prices and cover limits are shown in pounds, converted at the live exchange rate.

Cheapest policy quoted through HelloSafe by trip length, 1 traveller aged 70, Spain, departing the United Kingdom. Real quotes captured 22 August 2026 for a 5 October 2026 departure. Same numbers as the table above.

The shape of that chart is the finding. Price does not rise smoothly with trip length: it steps. Going from 21 to 31 days nearly doubles the premium, and then 31, 50 and 60 days all cost exactly £162.82, so the second month is free. If your trip is 25 days, quoting it at 31 costs you nothing extra and buys a week of slack. Our page on how much travel insurance costs covers the other levers, of which destination is the biggest: the same traveller going to the United States for 21 days was quoted £157.07 rather than £85.24.

Admin

What does it cost to change or cancel Avanti travel insurance?

Changing an Avanti travel insurance policy by phone costs £15, cancelling is only possible within 14 days of buying it, and auto-renewal is switched on at purchase unless you actively opt out. These are the terms most likely to cost an Avanti customer money, and none of them are about cover.

  1. You get 14 days to change your mind. Cancel inside the cooling-off period and you are refunded your premium less postage, provided you have not travelled, have not claimed and do not intend to.
  2. After 14 days there is no refund. Avanti does not return the unused portion of the premium, and you cannot reduce your level of cover either. Buying a year of annual cover and moving abroad in month two leaves you with nothing back.
  3. Amendments by phone cost £15. The administration fee applies to changes made through the contact centre and is waived when you make the same change yourself in a MyAvanti account. Adding a medical condition or increasing cover can also change the premium.
  4. Renewal happens by itself. Auto-renewal is applied at purchase unless you opt out. Avanti posts a reminder at least 21 days before expiry and takes payment the day before the current policy ends, on a like-for-like basis. You can stop it with 5 days' notice, or 10 days if you pay monthly.
No pro-rata refund is the term to notice

Plenty of UK travel insurers refund the unused part of an annual premium if you cancel mid-year, less an administration charge. Avanti does not: outside the 14 day cooling-off window there is no refund at all. That makes the annual multi-trip decision less reversible than it looks, particularly at the age where the per-trip cap is about to step down from 50 days to 35. Diary the renewal date and the opt-out deadline when you buy.

Claims

How do you claim on Avanti travel insurance?

An Avanti travel insurance claim runs through a 24 hour medical emergency assistance line for anything happening abroad, and through the claims team on 0333 577 5021 for everything else, with the excess for your cover level deducted from each section you claim under.

  1. Find the emergency number before you fly. Avanti prints the 24 hour medical assistance number in the policy wording rather than on its website, so save it to your phone at the point of purchase, not from a hospital bed.
  2. Call before you are treated. Calling the assistance line first is what allows the medical bill to be settled directly with the hospital rather than paid by you and reclaimed afterwards.
  3. Keep the paperwork as you go. Invoices, medical reports and discharge summaries for a medical claim; receipts plus a police or carrier report for baggage, money and delay claims. A file is only assessed once it is complete.
  4. Use the claims line for everything else. 0333 577 5021, Monday to Friday 8:30am to 8pm, Saturday 9am to 5:30pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm.

One gap is worth naming. Avanti publishes no claim acceptance rate, and we could not find an independently measured one for the brand at the time of writing. Its awards record speaks to service and value rather than to the proportion of claims paid, so on that specific question there is nothing to report either way, and we would rather say so than infer a number.

Reviews

What do customers say about Avanti travel insurance?

Avanti travel insurance holds a Trustpilot rating of 4.8 out of 5 from roughly 127,900 reviews, with 82% of reviewers awarding five stars and 2% awarding one. On volume and score it is one of the best rated travel insurance brands in the United Kingdom.

That number deserves one piece of context that applies to this whole category. The overwhelming majority of travel insurance reviews are written within days of buying a policy, when the only thing the customer has experienced is the quote process and the phone call. A 4.8 built on 127,900 of those is strong evidence that Avanti is easy to buy from and that its contact centre is good with older customers who have a complicated history to explain. It is much weaker evidence about what happens at claim time, which is the part you are actually insuring.

  • What the score reliably tells you: the quote journey, the phone service and the willingness to spend time on a medical declaration are all rated highly, across a very large sample.
  • What it cannot tell you: how the same brand behaves on a disputed claim, because relatively few reviewers have made one.
  • What the awards add: Best Travel Insurance at the Personal Finance Awards 2024/25 for a seventh consecutive year, Best Customer Service in 2025, Moneyfacts provider of the year in 2021 and 2022, and a Defaqto 5 star rating on the Deluxe policy.

Read alongside the contract, the picture is consistent. Avanti is a well-run sales and service operation with a genuinely good top-tier policy, and its friction sits in the administrative terms rather than in the cover: the renewal that happens by itself, the £15 to change something, the refund that does not exist after a fortnight.

FAQ

Avanti travel insurance: the questions readers ask most

  • On cover, yes at the top of the range. Deluxe carries unlimited emergency medical cover, £7,500 of cancellation cover and no excess, and Avanti has won Best Travel Insurance at the Personal Finance Awards for seven consecutive years to 2024/25, with a Defaqto 5 star rating on Deluxe. The weaknesses are the entry tier, where £1,000 of cancellation cover and a £150 excess leave small claims uninsured, and the administrative terms around renewal and refunds.

  • Avanti’s FAQ states there is no maximum age for cover. What changes with age is the length of trip it will write: up to 550 days on a single trip policy at 65 and under, 184 to 366 days between 66 and 70, and 123 to 366 days between 71 and 75 depending on the destination area. On annual multi-trip policies the per-trip cap drops from 50 days to 35 at 71.

  • It depends on the product and your age. A single trip or long stay policy allows up to 550 days at 65 and under, 184 to 366 days at 66 to 70 and 123 to 366 days at 71 to 75. An annual multi-trip policy allows 50 days per trip up to age 70, 35 days per trip from 71, and 183 travel days in total across the policy year on either.

  • They are separate brands run by the same business. Avanti travel insurance is arranged by TICORP Limited in Gibraltar and administered by Howserv Limited in the United Kingdom, and Howserv also runs Staysure. They quote independently and sell different product ranges, but comparing one against the other is not the same as comparing two unconnected insurers.

  • The insurer carrying the risk is named in the policy wording issued with your own policy, and it can change between policy years. Avanti’s separate Avanti Go product is underwritten by Great Lakes Insurance SE, part of the Munich Re group, administered by ERGO Travel Insurance Services Limited. Check the schedule you receive rather than a document found online.

  • Avanti publishes no tariff. It advertises single trip cover from £9.98, which is an entry headline across all ages and destinations rather than a quote for an older traveller, and it runs promotions of up to 20% off on its own pages. For comparison, our comparator quoted a UK resident aged 70 at £51.72 for 7 days in Spain and £85.24 for 21 days on 22 August 2026.

  • £150 per person on Essentials, £75 on Classic and nothing at all on Deluxe. The excess applies per person and per claim section, so on an Essentials policy a baggage claim below £150 pays nothing. Moving up to Classic halves the excess and multiplies cancellation cover by five, which is usually better value than it looks on the quote screen.

  • Yes, subject to screening. You must declare any condition you have been treated for or taken medication for in the last two years, plus every cardiovascular or circulatory condition regardless of when it started, which is a wider question than most UK insurers ask. Avanti states that over 1,300 conditions are covered. An undeclared condition can invalidate a claim linked to it.

  • Only within 14 days of buying it, and only if you have not travelled and have not claimed. Inside that window you are refunded the premium less postage. After 14 days Avanti gives no refund at all, not even a pro-rata one, and you cannot reduce your level of cover either. That is stricter than the pro-rata refunds several UK insurers offer.

  • Yes, unless you opt out at purchase. Auto-renewal is applied by default, Avanti posts a reminder at least 21 days before your policy expires, and payment is taken the day before it ends on a like-for-like basis. You can cancel the renewal with 5 days’ notice, or 10 days if you pay monthly. On an annual policy this matters most at 71, when the per-trip cap drops to 35 days.

  • Avanti advertises up to 20% off directly on its own product pages, so a code is often unnecessary. Keep the discount in proportion: 20% off a policy priced for your age and medical declaration can still land above a comparable unscreened policy bought elsewhere. Compare the final price against at least one alternative before you apply anything.

  • A long list of activities is included as standard on every cover level, including bungee jumping and jet skiing, although Avanti’s own pages quote both 85 activities and over 60. Winter sports cover is included free on Classic and Deluxe annual policies at any age, and is a paid add-on on single trip policies. Off-piste skiing is covered only under professional supervision at a recognised resort.

Alternatives

What is the best alternative to Avanti travel insurance?

The best alternative to Avanti travel insurance depends on your age and your trip length. Up to 65 an unscreened pan-European policy can match Avanti Deluxe on cancellation for around a quarter of a typical Deluxe premium; past 70, and on a trip beyond Avanti's per-trip caps, the comparison changes completely.

Which policy we would actually put in front of an Avanti shopper

If you are 65 or under, WorldSecure Platinum is the one to look at first. You get emergency hospital care abroad with no money to advance, repatriation organised and paid at actual cost, and about £7,836 of cancellation cover, which is more than Avanti Deluxe carries, for £62.75 on 21 days in Spain. Adventure activities are in the contract rather than sold back to you as an add-on.

If you are over 65, World Travel is the honest pick. It accepts travellers up to 84, quotes £85.24 for the same 21 day trip at 70, and includes about £261,000 of medical cover with about £1,306 of cancellation cover. Its real advantage on a long stay is the pricing band: 31, 50 and 60 days all cost £162.82, where Avanti’s annual policy simply will not write a 60 day trip once you are 71.

Be clear about where Avanti still wins. Its cancellation ceiling of £7,500 on Deluxe beats anything we quoted for a traveller over 65, its activity list is broader past 70 than the pan-European market currently manages, and it writes trips of up to 550 days that nobody here competes with. On an expensive cruise booked at 75, Avanti Deluxe is the better contract and we would rather say so.

Avanti is not the only UK brand worth a quote if age and trip length are your deciding factors. Our review of InsureandGo travel insurance covers a close competitor on long trips, Coverwise travel insurance sits at the cheaper end of the same market, and Post Office travel insurance is the mainstream benchmark to beat. If you are buying mainly on age, start from our guide to travel insurance for senior citizens; if you are cruising, start from cruise travel insurance. Or run your own trip through our travel insurance comparison and read the limits before the price.
